Finally, PM calls for repeal  of agricultural laws

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Center has decided to repeal agricultural laws. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister while addressing the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The Prime Minister said that the laws were introduced for the benefit of the farmers,  but some farmers did not understand the benefits of this. He apologized to the country for the inconvenience.

"Today I inform you that we have decided to repeal all three agricultural laws." The Prime Minister said at the end of his speech. The Prime Minister also demanded that the farmers end their strike. He said the decision was taken to ensure that no farmer was harmed.

The CPM's response was that the central government's decision was in the face of electoral defeat. The Congress and the CPM have welcomed the Centre's decision. AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal said the decision to withdraw the agricultural laws was a victory for the people. AK Antony said the Prime Minister's announcement was a belated prudent one. Elamaram Kareem also said that it was a victory of the farmers' struggle.

The new agricultural laws allowed private monopolies to acquire crops directly from farmers. The new law also favored contract farming. But the farmers' organizations demanded that the new three laws be abolished and that the traditional mandi system be completely abolished. Hundreds of thousands of farmers from Punjab and Haryana staged protests demanding these things. The central government is surrendering unconditionally after a year-long struggle centered in Delhi. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the CPM, have announced their support for the strike. The strike, which blocked major highways in the capital, has attracted international attention

The Supreme Court had earlier criticized the implementation of agricultural laws. The court had asked the Center what consultations the laws were brought in.

The Center had earlier held several discussions with farmers' organizations but said the rules could not be withdrawn. In this situation, the farmers' organizations were going ahead with the strike. The protest turned violent when protesters entered the country's capital on Republic Day last week. But the Centre's hasty decision came after the BJP suffered a major setback in the Hindi heartland in the recent by-elections. Following the election defeat, the central government had slashed petrol and diesel taxes in the country.
