Why Pakistan may face alarming level of water scarcity by 2025

The two-day conference brought together scientists, policy advisors, experts, and provincial and federal climate change officials from all over the country to discuss how to ensure water safety, security, and population health.

The seminar's experts reiterated that Pakistan's economic growth and sustainable development are now seriously threatened by water scarcity. Pakistan's groundwater resources, the last resort for water supply, are severely overdrawn in addition to surface water, primarily for irrigation purposes.

 

On the off chance that the circumstance stays unaltered, according to specialists, Pakistan might confront a disturbing degree of water shortage by 2025.

 

Scientists and policy advisors who spoke at a seminar titled Climate Change and Water-related Challenges in Pakistan: Unmistakable Arrangements' coordinated by the Aga Khan College's Establishment for Worldwide Wellbeing and Advancement and the public center point of Joined Countries' Reasonable Improvement Arrangements Organization.

 

James W-E S C O-A T, an Aga Khan Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also spoke at the event about important water issues in Pakistan's Indus Basin and climate change.

 

He expressed grave concerns regarding the likelihood of worsening drainage issues and increased flooding by 2050, particularly in the lower Indus Basin

 

In his keynote address, he stated, "We must support bold and pragmatic approaches to reconstruction, such as water and climate research networks and Indus Basin models with health and well-being at the core."

 

Dr N-A U S H-I N H Anwar of Karachi U B R-A N Lab emphasized that in the face of rising temperatures and extreme heatwaves, Pakistan needs resilient cooling pathways. She stated, "Pakistan requires energy that is sustainable, affordable, and reliable for cooling resilience and adaptation."

 

The World Resources Institute ranked Pakistan 14th out of 17 countries with "extremely high baseline water stress," according to experts at the event.

 

Water stress, on the other hand, is just one aspect of water security. As with any challenge, its outlook is influenced by management. Saudi Arabia and Namibia, two of the most arid and water-stressed nations, have successfully managed to preserve their water supplies.

 

Agriculture accounts for approximately 96% of Pakistan's freshwater supply and will account for nearly 23% of the country's GDP in 2021. Despite this, the nation continues to rely on a single river system and a water infrastructure that isn't always reliable.

 

The effects of climate change, which include more frequent floods, droughts, and the faster melting of glaciers in the north of the country, add to these factors. The negative effects on health and nutrition brought on by a recent flood storm's widespread destruction call for immediate and coordinated action at all governance and policy levels
