 A new research looking into a potential therapy for persons with monkeypox is being led by the group behind the COVID-19 therapies' world-renowned RECOVERY trial. The research has been ordered and paid for by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Now that the first sufferers have been enlisted.

        The smallpox virus family includes monkeypox, which has historically been uncommon outside of west and central Africa. We need conclusive proof that tecovirimat is safe and effective for the benefit of existing and future patients worldwide who have been diagnosed with monkeypox.         The experiment will be conducted by a group that includes the prestigious RECOVERY team, led by Sir Peter Horby, whose world-class work had a significant influence on patient outcomes throughout the COVID-19 epidemic. The thoroughness and reliability of this study will guarantee that the conclusions are generally accepted and will enable us to advance in the evaluation of monkeypox therapies.

 

        Participants in PLATINUM will be assigned at random to either a matching placebo therapy or a 14-day course of 600 mg tecovirimat twice daily. PLATINUM will be a community-based study, as opposed to RECOVERY, which enrolled hospital patients, with participants receiving the medication or a placebo in their own homes. Following clinical evaluation and test confirmation of monkeypox infection as part of routine NHS clinical treatment, eligible participants will be determined. At least 500 people from all around the UK are expected to participate in the study.
