Why One Health Priority Research Agenda on Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health concern that requires urgent attention. This may include studying the impact of interventions such as infection prevention and control measures, vaccination programs, and alternative therapies to reduce reliance on antibiotics.

  4. Transmission Dynamics: Investigating the routes and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance transmission between humans, animals, and the environment. Understanding how resistance genes move within and between different reservoirs is crucial for designing effective control measures.

  5. Diagnostics and Rapid Testing: Advancing the development of accurate and affordable diagnostic tools to identify resistant pathogens quickly. This includes point-of-care tests for healthcare settings and veterinary clinics, as well as improving laboratory capacity for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

  6. One Health Policy and Governance: Evaluating existing policies and governance structures related to antimicrobial use and resistance, and identifying opportunities for strengthening collaboration and coordination across sectors. This includes addressing regulatory barriers, promoting information sharing, and fostering international cooperation.

  7. Education and Awareness: Increasing public and professional awareness about antimicrobial resistance and promoting behavior change. Research should focus on effective communication strategies, educational interventions, and social mobilization to promote responsible antibiotic use and preventive measures.

 These research priorities within the One Health approach aim to foster collaboration between human health, animal health, and environmental experts to address the complex challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
