Why Drones are the Future

Drone racing is an exciting new sport, that has become popular faster than no other sport before it. Pilots steer small and lightweight, but high-powered drones along courses with obstacles. They fly through gates and around flags at speeds of over a hundred miles an hour.

          They control the drones using VR-like headgear. Every drone has a camera attached to it so that spectators can also view flights either on a big screen or with special headgear.

          The races take place either outdoors - in big stadiums, or indoors in old warehouses and sports arenas. Competitions are short because the battery time of drones is limited.Although drone racing started only a few years   ago, there  are already international competitions that take place all over the world. In professional leagues, drone pilots compete for thousands of dollars. In March, the World Drone Pix was staged in Dubai. A 16 years old British teenager not only one the race but also received prize money of 2,50,000 dollars.

          Television and other media have become aware of drone racing. ESPN, an American sports channel, will be broadcasting international drone races starting this August. Races are also recorded and uploaded to YouTube and other video platforms, where they can be viewed over and over again.  

          The first drones that hit the  markets were heavy and expensive. Today they have become much cheaper so that more and more people buy them and take up their new hobby.

Drones used in military to make surveillance images of enemy territory or send bombs with pinpoint accuracy. Recently, Amazon has considered using drones for making deliveries.

          Drones, also called unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have no human pilot onboard, and instead are either controlled by a person on the ground or autonomously via a computer program. These stealth craft are becoming increasingly popular, not just for war and military purposes, but also for everything from wildlife and atmospheric research to disaster relief and sports photography. Drones are becoming the eyes and ears of scientists by surveying the ground for archaeological sites, signs of illegal hunting and crop damage, and even zipping inside hurricanes to study the wild storms. You can even rent a personal drone to soar above the horizon and snap a photo or video.           In relation to emergency response, drones could be helpful during times of natural disaster. Drones may be able to access areas cut off by floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. They may be able to locate survivors, assess damage and deliver aid.

 

What is a drone?

A drone is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formerly known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems. Essentially, a drone is a flying robot that can be remotely controlled or fly autonomously using software-controlled flight plans in its embedded systems, that work in conjunction with onboard sensors and a Global Positioning System (GPS).

 

UAVs were most often associated with the military. They were initially used for anti-aircraft target practice, intelligence gathering and, more controversially, as weapons platforms. Drones are now also used in a range of civilian roles, including the following:

Surveillance

Traffic monitoring

Weather monitoring

Firefighting

Personal use

Drone-based photography

Videography

Agriculture

Delivery services

 

How do Drones work?

Drones have two basic functions: flight mode and navigation.

To fly, drones must have a power source, such as battery or fuel. They also have rotors, propellers and a frame. The frame of a drone is typically made of a lightweight, composite material to reduce weight and increase maneuverability.

 

Drones require a controller, which lets the operator use remote controls to launch, navigate and land the aircraft. Controllers communicate with the drone using radio waves, such as Wi-Fi.

 

What are common drone features and components?

 

Drones have many number of components, including:

Electronic speed controllers, which control a motor's speed and direction;

Flight controller;

GPS module;

Battery;

Antenna;

Receiver;

Cameras;

Sensors, including ultrasonic sensors and collision avoidance sensors;

Accelerometer, which measures speed; and

Alta meter, which measures altitude.
