Why keto diet is so important- Top seven reasons you should know

A keto diet is a special eating regime that mainly concentrates on food items that provide plenty of healthy fats, proper amounts of protein, and a meager quantity of carbohydrates.

The target is to take more calories from fat than from carbohydrates. This diet works by depleting the body of its glucose stores. As a result, it will initiate to break down fat for energy. This results in the formation of molecules known as ketones that the body starts to use for fuel.

When the body burns fats, it leads to extreme weight loss. There are many types of a ketogenic diet, including the standard ketogenic Diet and the cyclical ketogenic diet.

In this post, we will elaborate on the benefits of the keto diet and its harmful effects.

1. Extreme weight loss...

The ketogenic diet must help extreme weight loss in several ways, including boosting metabolism and reducing hunger. Ketogenic diets consist of special food items that fill a person up and decrease hunger-stimulating hormones.

Due to these reasons, following a keto diet must reduce hunger and promote extreme weight loss. In a meta-analysis of 2013 of 13 different randomized controlled trials, researchers note that persons following ketogenic diets lost 2 pounds (lbs) more than those following low-fat diets over one year.

In the same way, another review of 11 more studies elaborates that persons following a keto diet lost 5 lbs more than those following low-fat diets after six months.

2. Acne improvement...

Acne problem has many different causes and may have links to diet and blood sugar in some persons.

Eating a diet high in processed and refined carbohydrates may disturb the balance between gut bacteria and cause blood sugar to increase and decrease significantly, both of which can adversely affect the health of the skin.

A study conducted in 2012 tells by decreasing the intake of carbohydrates, a ketogenic diet can decrease the symptoms of acne in some people.

3. Keto diet reduces the risk of certain cancers...

Researchers have found the benefits of the ketogenic diet in preventing or even treat certain types of cancers.

A study found that the ketogenic diet may be a safe and reliable additional treatment to apply alongside chemotherapy and radiation therapy in persons who are suffering from certain types of cancers.

This is because it can cause more oxidative stress in cancer cells than in normal cells, leading them to die.

A study conducted in 2018 says that because the ketogenic diet decreases blood sugar levels, it could also reduce the risk of insulin complications.

Insulin is a hormone that controls blood glucose levels that may have links to certain cancers. Although some scientific research suggests the keto diet must have some benefit in treating certain types of cancers, studies in this field are still minimal.

Scientists still need to do more studies to rightly understand the potential benefits of the keto diet in preventing and treating certain cancers.

4. Heart health may be improved with keto...

When anybody follows the ketogenic diet, they must select healthy foods. Some evidence tells that consuming healthy fats, like avocados instead of less healthy fats like pork rinds, can help improve the heart's health by reducing triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

A study conducted in 2017 reveals humans and animals on a ketogenic diet showed that in some persons, there is a significant drop in the levels of total cholesterol, Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and triglycerides and a rise in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also called good cholesterol.

High levels of cholesterol and triglycerides could increase the risk of heart diseases.

Therefore, a keto diet’s decreasing effect on cholesterol may reduce anybody’s risk of heart problems.

However, this study resulted that the positive effects of the diet on the health of the heart depend on the quality of the diet taken. Therefore, it is necessary to eat a healthy diet, nutritionally well-balanced food while taking the ketogenic diet.

5. Keto improves brain functions...

Some studies that were conducted in 2019 reveals the ketones produce during the ketogenic diet give neuroprotective benefits, which means they give strength and protect the brain and nerve cells.

Due to this reason, a keto diet helps anybody manage or prevent some brain conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. However, still more research is necessary on the ketogenic diet’s effects on the brain's health.

6. Keto diet reduces seizures in epileptic patients...

Resulting of ketosis, the ratio of total fat, protein, and carbohydrates in a keto diet changes the way the body utilizes energy. Ketosis is a process of metabolism in which the body mainly uses ketone bodies as a fuel source.

The Epilepsy Foundation says that ketosis can decrease seizure episodes in patients affected by epilepsy, especially patients who do not respond to other medical treatments.

Still, more research work is necessary on it to properly understand its efficacy. The hypothesis supported by a study conducted in 2019 review that a ketogenic diet helps persons affected with epilepsy.

The keto diet reduces the symptoms of epilepsy by several different methods.

7. PCOS symptoms improved by keto diet...

Poly-cystic ovary disease or syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that resulted in excess male hormones, ovulation dysfunction, and polycystic ovaries. A high-carb diet may cause adverse effects in patients affected with PCOS, like skin problems and weight gain.

Still, there are not enough clinical studies available on the relation between the keto diet and PCOS. A pilot study was conducted in 2005 examined five women over a period of 24 weeks.

In this research, the scientists found that a keto diet improved many markers of PCOS problems, including...

  • Hormone balance
  • Weight loss
  • Change in the ratios of Luteinizing hormone (LH) and FSH-follicle-stimulating hormone.
  • Levels of insulin fasting

A study conducted in 2019 has some different opinions on it; they found that a keto diet had beneficial effects for persons affected with hormonal disorders, including Type 2 Diabetes and PCOS.
