The moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the fifth largest moon in the solar system. It is a rocky and airless body that formed around 4.5 billion years ago, shortly after the formation of the solar system. The moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, which means that it always presents the same face to us. During a partial lunar eclipse, the three celestial bodies are not perfectly aligned. The earth only partially covers the moon, meaning that only a part of the moon is in the earth's shadow. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when a part of the moon goes into the earth's umbra.
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse
A penumbral lunar eclipse is the least noticeable. This type of lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon, but the moon only passes through the earth's light shadows - penumbra. It is known as a penumbral lunar eclipse because the moon only moves into the penumbra of the earth, casting only a faint shadow on its surface.
Why does the moon turn red during a lunar eclipse?
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on a reddish-brown color, also known as a blood moon. The reason for this is due to the earth's atmosphere, which acts as a filter for certain colors of sunlight.
