Why did it take so long to build Shri Ram Temple?
The construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya has been a long and complex process, involving historical, religious, legal, and political aspects. According to some sources, the site of the temple was occupied by a mosque, known as Babri Masjid, which was built in 1528 by a commander of Mughal emperor Babur. The Hindus claimed that the mosque was built on the ruins of a Hindu temple, which was the birthplace of Lord Ram, a major deity in Hinduism.
The dispute over the ownership and control of the site led to several legal suits, protests, and clashes between the two communities over the centuries. The most violent incident occurred in 1992, when a mob of Hindu activists demolished the Babri Masjid, sparking riots and violence across the country. The matter was taken to the Supreme Court of India, which delivered its verdict in 2019, giving the disputed land to Hindus for construction of a temple, while Muslims would be given land elsewhere to construct a mosque.
The construction of Ram temple began in 2020, after a groundbreaking ceremony performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The temple, designed by the Sompura family of Ahmedabad, is expected to be completed by 2024. The temple is being supervised by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which has faced some controversies due to alleged misuse of donation, sidelining of its major activists and politicisation of the temple by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Ram temple is considered to be a symbol of the faith and devotion of millions of Hindus, who worship Lord Ram as an ideal king, husband, and warrior.
