What does mental health mean?
“There is no normal life that is free of pain.”
Our psychological, emotional, and social well-being all fall under the category of mental health. In other words, it affects our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in daily life. Our decision-making process, capacity for stress management, and our relationships with others are all influenced by our mental health.
A balanced lifestyle depends on good mental health. Nine hundred seventy million people around the world struggle with some mental illness. 1 in 4 people will be affected by a mental illness at some point in their lives. (14.3%) of deaths worldwide, or approximately 8 million deaths each year, are attributable to mental disorders.
Why is mental health important?
Many people suffer from mental illness, but they don't even know about it, and if they know, they don’t take it seriously, so it's necessary to know about it. It's important to remember that mental health is health; it is just as important as our physical health.
“Just like our physical health, our mental health can have ups and downs.
How we feel and think is central to the way we live our lives.”
Emotional and mental health is important because it's an essential part of our life and affects our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. Being emotionally balanced can increase efficiency and effectiveness in activities like jobs, education, and in other fields of life. It plays an important part in the health of our relationships and allows us to adapt to changes in our lives and cope with adversity. It affects our life from every perspective.
How can we improve our mental health?
Take the following actions to enhance mental health:
I) Relax and reduce stress by exercising, like; breathing exercises.
ii) Find ways to learn and be creative.
(iii) Spend time in nature.
(iv) Connect with others.
(v) Eating a balanced diet.
(vi) Try to get enough sleep.
(vii) Allocate some time for meditation.
(viii) Volunteering.
Volunteering is a voluntary act of an individual or group freely giving time and labor for community service. Many kinds of research proved that volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Volunteering keeps us in regular contact with others and helps us develop a solid support system that helps to counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety when we're going through challenging times. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce anxiety and stress. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on our overall psychological well-being.
What to do if we start to feel changes in our overall mental health?
Many people suffer from mental illness, but they don't even know about anxiety, depression, or other mental disorders. Issues related to mental health can affect different people in different ways. If we start to see changes in our overall happiness and relationships, first, we should acknowledge that there is something wrong with us–something unusual. Take it seriously as we take our physical health seriously. There are always ways to get the support we want.
Here are some ways we can get help:
- Connect with other individuals, friends, and family – Reaching out and opening up to other people in our life can help to provide emotional support.
- Learn more about mental health – There are many resources we can turn to for learning more about emotional health. There are online resources, too, to learn and cope with mental health.
- Take a mental health assessment – An assessment can assist in determining if stress, anxiety, or depression may have an impact on our life.
- Talk to a professional– our overall mental health and welfare can be improved by speaking with a professional. If we start to feel like our emotional and mental health is starting to impact us, it may be time to reach out for extra support or external support than our family members. Mental health and behavioral health therapists specialize in many areas of behavioral health, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mood behaviors, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and other mental disorders. We may benefit from talking to someone outside our close family and friends because sometimes there are some thoughts in our mind that we cannot share even with those people to whom we are very close.
- Volunteering- It has been proved by researchers that the service of humanity is the best way to reduce stress and anxiety. It creates a strong relationship with the other people that provides us with a strong support system.
In short, Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It impacts our cognitive ability, feelings, and actions. Additionally, it influences how we deal with stress, interact with others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood, and taking care of emotional and mental health is a wise opinion.
