Why immunization is important

Immunization is crucial.

One of the best methods to shield yourself, your family, and future generations from infectious diseases is through vaccination. To put it another way, by getting vaccinated, you can prevent the spread of diseases both today and in the future.

 

You are taking care of your own family as well as vulnerable others in your community by making sure you and your family are completely immunized (by adhering to the National Immunization Program Schedule established by the Australian Government). A disease can spread more slowly and with fewer people being affected as a result of increased vaccination rates.

 

Immunizations prevent death. Thousands of children every year were dying from illnesses including tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis) as late as the 1950s.

How do vaccines function?

The effects of each immunization are the same. The immunization boosts your immune system's ability to fight off infections before you even come into contact with them. In other words, it is similar to having the condition but not showing any symptoms.

 

After receiving a vaccination, if you come into touch with an infection, your body will strive to prevent you from contracting the illness, or you may only experience a minor case. Contrary to alternative immunization methods that have been suggested (such as homeopathy), vaccines have undergone extensive testing to show that they are both safe and efficient at preventing infectious disease.

What about those who are immune to vaccinations?

Some members of our community are immune to vaccinations. They might be too young or too ill, which could explain this. By keeping your family's immunizations up to date, you may aid in protecting these defenseless individuals.

 

By getting vaccinated, you make a significant contribution to the safety of your neighborhood and yourself.

 

Because a disease cannot travel readily from one person to another, when enough members of the community are immunized, disease transmission is slowed or halted entirely. The sickness won't spread as long as enough people receive the vaccine. Friends, relatives, and others are safeguarded by what is known as herd immunity or community immunity, especially those who cannot receive immunizations.

Current infectious disease outbreaks

Thanks to vaccination, several infectious diseases are either uncommon or extinct. However, infectious disease epidemics continue to occur now in different parts of the world:

 

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a novel illness about which nothing is yet known. We are always learning more about the condition and its long-term repercussions thanks to new studies.

There are still sporadic epidemics of flu, chicken pox, whooping cough, and measles in Australia, typically brought in from abroad. If individuals stop getting vaccines, they could stage a significant comeback.

Zika - Following outbreaks in Central and South America, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency in February 2016. Continuous evidence of transmission has been found in the Americas, Africa, and other regions of the world.

Ebola: The majority of Ebola cases are found in Africa. The most recent Ebola virus outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August 2018 and is still going strong.

HIV/AIDS - In America, the first instances of the disease were found within the LGBT community in 1981, and by 1985, at least one case had been recorded from every continent. Around 38 million people worldwide were estimated to be HIV/AIDS-positive in 2020. Although there is currently no cure, patients can live long and healthy lives thanks to modern treatments.
