The life span of the American people has increased dramatically in the last century. We can now expect to live to be 77 years, 30 years longer than before. By taking care of our bodies we can easily live a long, healthy life.
People Live Longer
There are more people in the United States over 100 years than ever before, about 50,000. More than three times as many as 100 years old than those 20 years ago. Since all these people are not related, they do not have the same genetic makeup. Some have thought that this was a major factor in longevity, but there is only a small part. Other factors that play a major role in our lives are the environment, activities, exercise, family relationships, social interactions and emotional health. Of course, a long life does not always mean a healthy and happy life.
Make Good Health Changes
There is no prescriptive drug that will stop the flow of emotions, though their effects can be curtailed. For many people, the way their bodies age depends on them. There are practical steps you can take to feel better and to live longer. Older people are just not lucky - they are working to stay healthy! You should be motivated to take these steps and be consistent.
Most of the time people wait until they are past middle age and in a health crisis before taking steps to ensure a healthy lifestyle. For some, this is too late. Some can achieve great change and give themselves the opportunity to enjoy the golden years. Different medicines are also available to help fight many common diseases.
Practical Steps for Everyone
Doctors have told us for years to exercise. Together we do not get enough exercise due to high technology and advances in all areas of work. For optimal health, it is recommended that you have at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This helps with many health issues such as keeping weight down and strengthening the heart and other body parts. If you do not like to exercise alone, get a friend to go with you or take you to the gym.
Eating the right foods, high fiber, low fat with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables has become a major factor in communities where people live longer. Do not smoke, or quit smoking if you are doing to prevent diseases caused by tobacco. Drink plenty of water and soft drinks or a little alcohol.
Mental and emotional health also have an impact on overall health. People with large extended families or many people affected do not have much time to feel alone or hopeless. Others donate their time or service to a place where they can feel useful and productive. A person who is always looking for new things to learn will be more active and more likely to stay involved in life. People who have a sense of satisfaction and purpose are generally healthier and happier.
Be Healthy Now
Look for signs of health problems. If you have a problem, go to your doctor for a checkup. If you stop something you will have less chance of healing. Have regular check-ups so that problems can be resolved early. Start changing your habits now - don't wait. If you are overweight, change your diet. If you do not exercise, make sure you start exercising.
If you have a health problem, see your doctor and get treatment. If you are lonely find a way to meet or help people. If you have a bad habit, start changing it today. One day you may be able to join others who are 100 years old as they enjoy a long, healthy, full life
