why Green Tea and the Asian Paradox

Of all the controversial claims about the health benefits of green tea, one that raises serious doubts is the claim that it can be a cure for cancer. While it may not be a cure, however, many studies seem to indicate that lifelong green tea actually reduces the risk of cancer in later life.

The strongest evidence supporting this theory is known as the ‘Asian paradox’. The paradox of Asia, according to Yale researchers, is that Asia has very high rates of smoking, yet cancer rates are lower than in Europe or the United States. Researchers believe that the difference between the two is in the diet of most Asian green people (more than a liter per day on average).

Other studies have supported this hypothesis: one study comparing older Japanese people who drank green tea with those who did not find that those who drank green tea usually lived a few years longer. A study by the University of Murcia in Spain found that the chemical in green tea called  is very similar to the cancer drug methotrexate, in that it appears to kill cancer cells This is another very encouraging study at the moment, as methotrexate is a drug with many side effects, and instead green tea can be very effective.

However, the opposite of all this is that a very large amount of green tea has been found to cause cancer in laboratory mice, suggesting that too much green tea may be worse for you than none at all - perhaps the same effect The nature of the general research is uncertain, as a few drug companies are interested in funding studies of what is perceived as ‘alternative medicine’, testing is left to universities that are interested but not so funded. Hopefully, in the next few decades, there will be more interest in investigating the health benefits of green tea, and we will finally find our answer.
