Why food is necessary in health*
Food is necessary in a healthy life. Let's see its importance.
Our eating habits and lifestyles are the main cause of many common diseases that occur to us. With today's mechanized modern lifestyle, we have adjusted everything to suit our needs, including our working hours, our daily eating patterns, and the duration of our sleep.
Our diet and lifestyle are the fundamental reasons for our body to function without disease. In many books about our traditional medicine, Siddha Medicine and in our Palandamili texts like Tirukkural, Purananooru, our diet is clearly explained.
Food is medicine and medicine is food is the basis of our traditional medicine. In ancient times, small grains like kambu, kelvaraku, white corn, etc., rice varieties like cumin champa, kunrimanich champa, manichamba became not only food for our body but also fertilizer.
Forgetting greens and vegetables in our daily diet and giving more importance to fast food, everything starts with constipation, stomach ulcers and cancer in the alimentary tract.
Again, we have to start following our traditional food patterns with the children in our home from a very young age. Dry fruits, cashews, almonds, peanut candies, eggplant, sundals etc. can be given to children instead of biscuits and other bakery products.
It is better to have non-vegetarian food once a week in gravy rather than frying it completely in oil.
The best food is to wake up early in the morning, drink water on an empty stomach and take a bath after defecation. Indigestion, lethargy, etc., are the basis of other diseases due to late eating and eating excessive amounts of food.
Our food systems like rice, pittu, and urad kali are essential for women during menstruation and childbearing. Because of forgetting these types of food, cysts and menstrual disorders are common diseases among many young women.
So, depending on what kind of food we eat and how much we eat, we can protect ourselves from many diseases. So let's live richly by following our traditional food systems in harmony with nature.
Not only what food to eat, but also how to eat and what kind of utensils to cook, our Siddha medical texts explain.
Cooking food in clay pots does not change the properties of the food. Eating banana leaves will make your skin glow. Foods that are suitable for the body should be eaten full of flavors. Every flavor in the food we eat strengthens our body's minerals. Generally, food is digested in our body in the second half.
So we eat 3 meals a day. Our forefathers said that breakfast should be eaten by 8 am, lunch by 1 pm and dinner by 6.30 - 7 pm. But with the passage of time, as the time we eat food has changed, the time it takes for them to achieve digestion also varies and many diseases appear in the body.
Our forefathers observed fasts to avoid this. During these fasts, our digestive organs get rest as we are starving.
Bile increases in our body when we are generally hungry. Because of this, early in the next morning, you should eat food made with bile-calming substances like agathiyali, gooseberry, and gourd. Therefore, by fasting once in 15 (a) 30 days, many diseases in the digestive organs are prevented.
By avoiding fast foods mixed with maida etc., you can live a disease-free life by adding nutritious vegetables and spicy foods to your daily diet. And as much as fasting is important to give rest to the digestive organs, it is also necessary to take medicine once in 4 months to clean the entire alimentary tract. It is better to take Bedi medicine early in the morning on an empty stomach. Depending on the nature of the disease and the immune system of the patient, the appropriate medicines are prescribed by the doctors.
Apart from these, methods of drinking water are also explained in our Siddha medical books. Drinking water in a tambara vessel will strengthen the heart; Drinking hot water boiled in earthen vessels after meals prevents regurgitation, regurgitation, belching and colic. So food is basic for us to live disease free. Eating a balanced diet rich in flavors and eating at the right time, as told by our forefathers, can lead to a disease-free and prosperous life.
