Fish is now being farmed on land set aside for a Tata factory in Singur, West Bengal. Fish farming on industrial land has given rise to new discussions in the state. The state government is not willing to set up a factory on this land even in the face of criticism.
Singur is a historical name of West Bengal. In 2007, the then Left Front government leased 996 acres of land in this agriculturally dependent police station in Hooghly district to Tata to build a car factory in the state for industrialization. This land of Singur was fertile and had three crops. Paddy and potato were produced more here.
After handing over the land to Tata, the Tata group set up a factory on the land to make cheap Nano brand cars. But some of the landowners of Singur did not want a car factory here that day. On that day, the owners of 400 acres of land formed an anti-Tata and anti-land acquisition movement in Singur at the behest of Trinamool and opposition leader Mamata. In response to that demand, the people of Singur also went on hunger strike.
Ratan Tata, the leader of the Tata group, which was embroiled in the anti-land acquisition movement, relocated the Nano car factory from Singur in 2006 to Gujarat. Broke the structure of the factory. But the Tata group then took refuge in this land from the Calcutta High Court to the Supreme Court of India. The Trinamool Congress and the state government fought in that case.
In 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that land acquisition in Singur was not legal and ordered that the land be returned to the farmers. The West Bengal government, in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court, returned the land to the landowners with compensation. Mamata also announced that this time the farmers will start cultivating the land again. To that end, the farmers started cultivating the land but did not get back the fertility of the land. The crop failed. Later he took initiative to cultivate paddy, potato and vegetables in that land Practically fails. This is because the fertility of the land goes away in the digging of nano car factories. When Mamata took the initiative to cultivate the land on her own, she also failed. He sowed the seeds of sarsaparilla in the land with his own hands on 19 October 2016. But the land and fertility did not return. So it failed to produce the top.
However, Mamata Banerjee benefited politically from this movement. In the 2011 state assembly elections, Mamata's Trinamool Congress was able to bring the 34-year-old Left Front government to power in the state. Then Mamata took the initiative to cultivate the land of Singur. But he did not get success in farming. That is why the 996 acres of land in Singur is considered as virtually powerless land.
At the direction of the government of West Bengal, a group of farmers took the initiative to cultivate fish by making henna on this land. The state government also said that only those who have 2.5 acres of land can cultivate fish on this land. To this end, the state government will bear the overall cost of fish farming. With that aim, the farmers of a part of the land have started making fish farms in the low lands of Singur.
But this demand has been strengthened in the political arena, even though there is no cultivation in the land of Singur, there is a favorable situation for building heavy industry there now. But Mamata does not want to walk that path. Because he has already promised not to build big industry in Singur. Therefore, the state government has taken initiative to cultivate fish in this barren land by making hens to make the farmers of Singur smile.
However, Becharam Manna, one of the leaders of the Singur movement and state minister for panchayats in the state, said that the structure of the 12-bigha pond, which was built by the Tatara industry, was now being excavated.
