A nine month pregnancy is not that easy for any woman. Being pregnant requires that extra amount of energy, patience, and stamina for the most challenging human female experiences. Special care should be taken in taking care of yourself, including following your diet and making the environment as conducive as possible for a healthy pregnancy.
Men may think that women are simply weighed down by the extra physical weight that comes with pregnancy. In truth, pregnancy is a very complex and delicate process. A human being is developing in the womb of a woman and everything a mother does, thinks, feels and says affects her baby. By preparing for pregnancy, a woman could minimize her health risks and even enjoy the duration of her pregnancy. It goes without saying that a very important aspect of pregnancy is taking care of the woman's health. Part of a pregnant woman's health care is the use of "prenatal vitamins." These are multivitamins created especially for pregnant women. These supplements make up for the nutritional deficiencies in the pregnant mother's diet during the course of pregnancy. Vitamins contain more folic acid, iron and calcium, all of which are important to ensure proper health and development of both mother and baby. Folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects, especially of the brain and spinal cord. Calcium, on the other hand, prevents the mother from losing her bone density as her baby uses this mineral for bone growth. Finally, iron is needed to help both the mother's and the fetus' blood raise the oxygen levels in their respective blood streams.
Another thing that a mother should keep in mind is that she has to gain weight during her pregnancy. It is not safe to lose weight during pregnancy as both the baby and the mother need the right amount of nutrients to be healthy. It is a good sign if a pregnant woman gains weight as it is a sign that the baby is getting all the nutrients and growing at a healthy rate. A pregnant woman doesn't need to eat for two, but she does need extra calories for the growing baby. Two to four pounds are gained in the first three months of pregnancy and one pound a week for the following weeks. The extra weight goes to the baby, the mother's placenta, breast tissue and blood supply. A woman's body also stores fat and other nutrients that will be needed once she enters lactation. A healthy pregnant woman's diet should include a variety of foods to get all the necessary nutrients. Six to eleven servings of breads and cereals, two to four servings of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and protein sources (eggs, nuts, meat, poultry) are equally important. Having a diet rich in fiber is always good for you. Meals such as pasta, rice, cereals and breads should be provided to a pregnant woman. The pregnant woman should also consume at least four servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods per day. She needs at least 1000-1300 milligrams of calcium in the woman's diet. You should also have a regular source of vitamin C every day, including fruits and vegetables. A whopping 70 milligrams of vitamin C a day is enough for both mother and baby. Indeed, a pregnant woman deserves all the best in terms of food, rest, environment, and not to mention the loving support of her husband and family. Pregnancy is a beautiful human experience. But a lot of work is also needed to ensure that both mother and baby live long and healthy lives beyond the pregnancy period.
