The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday classified a corona virus variant that was first identified in India as a "global concern". This variant, known as P.1617, was classified under investigation (VUI) by authorities in the UK in early May. It has already spread to more than 17 countries and many countries have imposed travel restrictions on travelers from India.
A comparative assessment of a variant of interest (VOI) after consultation with the Viral Evolution Task Force to examine the spread or detrimental effect of COVID-19 infection, the increase in the virus or the change in clinical disease presentation, or the decrease in the effectiveness of public health and social activities, vaccines, and treatment modalities. Can be classified as variant of concern (VOC).
Last week, the Indian government called the variant the "double mutant variant". This may be linked to the outbreak of corona virus infection found in some states. It stated that the change in the center's previous position i.e. its strain had not been identified in enough models to make a connection to the current rise. However, the government said the connection was "not fully established".
Earlier in March, the Indian Ministry of Health said that the new "dual mutant variant" was diagnosed in addition to the many strains or anxiety disorders (VOCs) found in 18 states. P.1617 was first referred to as VUI on 1 April by UK health officials.
Variation of a virus, with one or more mutations.
They differ from other types in circulation. Most mutations are harmful to the virus while some viruses make it easier to survive.
Basically, the goal of the virus is to reach a point where it can cooperate with humans. Because, it needs a host to survive. This means that any virus can become less severe as it develops. However, in this process it may escape the body's immune response or achieve some mutations that may be highly contagious.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is growing rapidly. Because, it has affected people all over the world. It is easy to replace as it is highly circulating and the virus can copy fast.
The B.1.617 variant has two virus mutations referred to as E484Q and L452R. Both are found separately in several corona virus types. However, they were first reported together in India.
The L452R mutation has been found in some other VOIs, such as B.1.427 / B.1.429. They are believed to be highly contagious.
The WHO has reported that laboratory studies by samples may have reduced neutralization against variants with E484Q mutation from victims of natural infections.
The Public Health England (PHE) states that if variants of SARS-CoV-2 are considered for epidemiological, immunological or pathogenic properties, they should be raised for proper investigation.
The three types first identified in India (VUI-21APR-01, -21APR-02 and VUI-21APR-03) are called VUI by PHE. Following a risk assessment with its relevant expert panel, the variants identified in India were named the Variant of Concern (VOC) by the UK Health Authority.
On the other hand, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classify variations into three categories: variant of interest (VOI), variant of concern (VOC), and variant of high outcome. In the United States, the types B.1.526, B.1.526.1, B.1.525 (previously designated UK1188 and first identified in the UK), and P.2 (first identified in Brazil). On the other hand, the B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1, B.1.427, and B.1.429 types in circulation in the United States are classified as the most worrying types.
