We sleep for around a third of our lives. Yet, sleep continues to be a mystery and a challenge for many people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that more than one-third of American adults don't get enough sleep.
Four specialists from Arizona State University are offering advice and insights from their study on sleep in an effort to help us sleep better, appreciate the pleasures of sleep, and find answers to some of our most urgent problems.
Describe sleep.
In contrast to hibernation or a coma, you are less conscious of your surroundings when you are asleep, and your body moves very little. Importantly, this state is also quickly reversible. However, that is only what is visible to us from the outside.
When you're asleep, your brain operates according to a whole different set of laws than when you're awake. According to Megan Petrov, an associate professor at Arizona State University's Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, "some areas of your brain that are not very active when you're awake light up when you're asleep, and vice versa.
Scientists refer to your body's regular cycles as circadian rhythms. The sleep-wake cycle, which determines whether your body feels sleepy or alert throughout the day, is one of the most well-known circadian rhythms. Your brain receives a signal to produce the melatonin hormone, which induces sleep, when outside light becomes less intense. Because of this, exposure to natural light is crucial for sleep.
According to Shawn Youngster, a professor at Edson College, "the circadian system's natural pattern is more like 24 and a half hours long instead of 24." "Your circadian rhythm would slightly lag each day if you spent a few months in a cave without any light to alert your brain.
Why do we walk, talk, and fantasize while we sleep?
On why, we dream, scientists have many different theories. According to one well-liked explanation, it is the outcome of our brain organizing and storing all the knowledge we acquired that day.
"We know that by dreaming and even by recalling our dreams, we seem to learn better," she claims. This is probably due to memories being activated and solidified when we dream.
A sleep problem called sleepwalking appears to run in families. The deeper, non-REM sleep stages are when it occurs. Even commonplace actions like pouring a bowl of cereal, which people frequently perform when awake, may be performed by those who sleepwalk.
What influences how well you sleep?
Did you know that sleep health follows similar patterns to the distribution of health in society that have been brought up by the pandemic?
The distribution of sleep quality, according to Connor Sheehan, an assistant professor at the T. Denny Sanford School of societal and Family Dynamics, "reflects wider social inequality." People with greater social advantages, greater wealth and education, and white people typically sleep better than those of color and those with lower socioeconomic means.
I think that in order to have a more egalitarian society overall, we would also need a more equitable allocation of sleep, according to Sheehan.
Finally, because sleep habits alter over your lifespan, age has an impact on how well you sleep. In general, people sleep more while they are younger. While older folks may sleep closer to 7 hours, newborns can get up to 17 hours of sleep.
Older folks' biological clocks somewhat advance, causing them to rise and fall asleep earlier. In addition, older persons typically experience less restorative, deep sleep because they tend to get less stage three and stage four sleep.
"You sleep worse as you get older, and that's important because conditions that are strongly linked to sleep — like heart disease or Alzheimer's — are also a higher risk when you're older," continues Sheehan.
