WHY DO YOU PERSECUTE ME?

BURNING THE BIBLE

He hated the Bible classes so much that he disturbed the class by asking awkward questions and making silly remarks. Whenever he saw missionaries preaching in the open marketplace, he would slowly hit them with stones and run away. When Sundar was 14, his mother, whom he loved dearly, died. A few months later, his elder brother (to whom he was very attached) too died. Without his mother and brother, the house was felt empty. He tried his best to accept his karma(fate). But he was, after all, a young lad.

Sundar started giving vent to his frustrations by openly criticizing Christians. One day he took the New Testament, tore it into pieces, and set it on fire. When Sher Singh came to know about it, he was angry with Sundar. He told him that the Bible was the Holy book of Christians, and if he did not like it, he could have at least returned the Bible to the missionary who had given it to him.

Sundar was deeply hurt. He was puzzled why his father was speaking in support of an alien God. He did not want to live anymore if God did not reveal the true way to peace.

WHY DO YOU PERSECUTE ME?

At about 3:00 a.m., he bathed himself and knelt on the floor, asking God to reveal himself. Time passed by, and nothing happened. Suddenly a faint glow appeared in his room. The sun had not yet risen, and he went out into the courtyard to see what was the source of light. There was nothing there in the courtyard. As he entered the room, The light became brighter and brighter. It took the form of a globe hanging in midair, and amidst the radiant light was Jesus. He asked Sundar, “Why do you persecute Me? See, I’ve died on the cross for you and the whole world.”

The vision of Jesus brought indescribable peace to Sundar. He wanted to share his joy with his father. He rushed to his father's bedside and told him, “I have seen Jesus, and I’ve become a Christian! His father was irritated. He said, what are you talking, you silly boy? Only a few days back, you were tearing the Bible and abusing Christians. Now go back to bed.

Luckily for Sundar, the headmaster of the school was the father of one of his classmates. So Sundar went to him and asked him to teach the Bible. The headmaster did not know what to do. Most of the children in his school came from rich, influential and Orthodox sick, and Hindu families. If the parents knew that even one child was encouraged to become a Christian, they would see that the school is closed down. Further, the small group of Christians in the village mostly converted from the untouchable sweeper community. So, becoming a Christian meant mingling with them. This was unacceptable to the upper castes.

But seeing the lad's eagerness, the headmaster started teaching him the Bible secretly after school hours. Soon, Sundar's friend Sridhar, a Sikh, joined him to learn about Jesus. As the classes went on, the faith of the two lads became stronger. They knew the price they would have to pay for their faith, and they were ready for it.
