Why do we forget what we were supposed to do while walking in a room?

 

You go into a room and see that you have forgotten who you are there. Did you need anything? Or did you want to do something? Anyway, gone.

 

Psychologists call this the "gate effect".

 

For a 2011 study in the "Quarterly Journal" of Experimental Psychology, researchers at the University of Notre Dame confirmed that people are much more likely to lose their train of thought or forget something after walking through a door.

 

It's not just a strange mental disorder. This indicates that your brain relies on spatial and relevant signals to organize information and imposes a certain order on the world.

 

Notre Dame psychologist Gabriel Radwansky, PhD, said in a press release with his 2011 study that "entering or leaving the door serves as a 'boundary of events' in the mind."

A famous memorization technique known as the Loki method supports this idea. This technique involves imagining a place - like your childhood home - and mentally setting up something that you want to remember in a certain place inside it. According to a 2009 case study, a person used this technique to memorize a string of more than 65,000 numbers.

 

Why does your brain work this way? Experts believe that the human mind tries to create a link between space and the events that take place between them so that the next time you are in the same setting you know what to expect and how to respond optimally.

 

Event boundaries don't just help organize and store information in your brain. They affect many other aspects of knowledge.

 

When you cross the boundaries of an event, your attention is drawn to your immediate environment. (This helps explain the effect of the door.)

 

Also, depending on where you are and what you are accustomed to doing there, your mood, your thoughts and your behavior may all change according to your setting. For example, if you go to your kitchen, you may feel hungry. If you are in bed, your sleep may be disturbed. If you go to your office, you may feel stressed.

 

Much of this event-range work involves research in practice.

 

As you may have heard, environmental signals or "triggers" belong to habitual behavior. Once you establish a connection between a setting and a behavior, it is extremely difficult - some experts say impossible - to dissolve that connection for you. It is best to change your routine often so that your brain avoids settings or hints related to your problem habits.

 

All of this research raises some important questions: What happens when we move large parts of our lives away from individual physical space to virtual? What happens when work, play, shopping, learning, flirting and our other daily activities are not separated by spatial and temporary and relevant boundaries, but wherever and whenever we are on our screen?

 

These questions are just beginning to be tested by experts. Preliminary results should concern us.

 

In his new book Frontal Fatigue, Yale University psychiatrist Mark Rego, MD, explores some of the ways that technology is pushing the boundaries used to define and illustrate our lives.

Research on "border theory", which describes how people separate work and family life, can lead to some problems when we do too much in one place using the same tools.

Surprisingly, they found that the use of technology at home, for example checking work emails, was associated with reduced isolation and poor recovery results.

Some experts offer similar advice when it comes to a stressful job. By setting a time and place for anxious thoughts, you may be able to prevent other parts of your life from flooding.

 

The most important way here is that it is wired to work within certain types of boundaries, not the kind that prevents it, but the kind that creates a useful separation.

 

These limits do all kinds of good work for you. By blurring your lines, technology makes it easier than ever, can confuse how you think, feel and how we begin to understand.
