The human skeleton consists of 206 bones bound together by hard and inflexible connective tissues called ligaments.
HUMAN BODY
It is a framework that holds a body together. It provides support to the body. Without a skeleton, our body would have been like a rag doll. It protects and supports the various delicate organs of our body, like the brain, heart etc. It provides support to the soft portions of our body. All our body movements are also possible due to our skeleton. It provides the levers for the muscles to work.
WHY DOES OUR BODY NEED WATER?
Water is the most essential substance for all living things. A living creature can live without food for a few days, but not without water. Around 70 per cent of the human body is made up of water. Other living beings also have more water in their bodies. Cells are the basic units of the human body. The cells contain water molecules in them. If there is a shortage of water in our body, these cells will cease to function
An adult needs 3/4 of water and 1/4 of solids in a day. The solids may be in the form of cereals, bread, fruits, vegetables, bread and so on. These solid items of food also contain 30 to 90 percent water in them. In addition to this quantity of water, around ten quarts of water pass back and forth inside the body between the different organs. The blood vessels in our body contain about five quarts of blood and three quarts of water. The proportion of blood and water never changes.
WHY DO DREAMS OCCUR?
Dreaming is a form of mental activity that occurs during sleep. Many studies have been done to understand why a person dreams.
Some studies have shown that dreams are perceptual in nature. Our dreams are directly related to our feelings, fears, wishes, needs and memories. Some psychoanalysts opine that our dreams are the expressions of our unfulfilled wishes.
Dreams are also influenced by certain external factors. For example, if a person is tired or hungry, he may dream about food or a warm and cozy bed. If the blanket has slipped off, food or a warm and cozy bed. If the blanket has slipped off a sleeping person's body, he may dream of an iceberg. In ancient times, it was believed that dreams were spiritual in origin and were related to a person's future. Aristotle was of the opinion that dreams originated from within the dreamer's heart.
WHAT CAUSES US TO WAKE UP FROM SLEEP?
Strange are our experiences with sleep. At times, we feel so sleepy that we can't wait to get to our beds. At other times, we don't get sleep at all. It is difficult to ascertain why we get up from sleep.
When we exert our body and brain by doing physical or mental work, our body, and brain need a rest and, we feel sleepy. After a good sleep, our body, and brain get back the energy, and we feel fresh.
While we are asleep, some of our systems are still working. Even in sleep, we feel hungry, cold, hot and damp. These feelings may stimulate our brain, and we wake up. Sometimes, we wake up after we have seen a fearful dream. Our body needs a sleep of about six to seven hours. When we have had a good sleep of six to seven hours, we wake up.
