Why is the Delta variant of covid-19 more dangerous?

The Delta variant of covid-19 is more infections and spreads much faster than early forms of SARS-CoV-2.

This is because the variant of the delta is very contagious...

The delta variant of covid-19 is highly contagious, nearly twice as contagious as previous infection variants.  

Some basic studies found that the variant of Delta causes more severe illness than the previous strains in unvaccinated persons.

In two different types of studies conducted in Scotland and Canada, the patients infected from the variant of delta infection were more likely to be hospitalized than the patients who were previously infected with the alpha or the original virus strains.  

 

The unvaccinated people are still the greatest concern...

Although breakthrough infections occur much less often than infections in unvaccinated people, individuals infected with the delta variant, including fully vaccinated people with symptomatic breakthrough infections, can transmit this infection to other people. 

Centers for disease control and prevention are trying to collect data on whether fully vaccinated people with asymptomatic(without symptoms) breakthrough infections can transmit or not.

However, the most important problem of the danger of transmitting this infection is among unvaccinated persons who are more likely to contract and thus transmit the virus.

Fully vaccinated persons with variants of delta breakthrough infections can spread the virus to others. However, fully vaccinated people seem to be infectious for a shorter period... 

Previous variants of this infection typically produced less virus in the body of fully infected vaccinated people (breakthrough infections) than in unvaccinated people. 

 

In contrast, the variant of Delta seeming produces an equivalent huge amount of virus particles in both categories, like unvaccinated and fully vaccinated persons.

However, like other variants of this infection, the entire amount of virus generated by the delta variant breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated persons also goes down faster than the infections in unvaccinated persons.

It means fully vaccinated people are likely infectious for less time as compared to unvaccinated people.

 

Delta variant infection what should we need to know...

On 27th July 2021, the CDC issued an updated guideline on the need for urgently increasing Covid-19 vaccination coverage and a recommendation for everybody in areas of high-risk transmission to wear a mask, especially in public indoor places, even if they are already fully vaccinated. 

This new guideline was released by the CDC because of several concerning developments and newly emerging data signals. In the days leading up to our new guidance update, CDC noted a rapid and alarming increase in the Covid cases and hospitalization rates around the country.

 

  • At the last of June 2021, the approximate average of reported cases was around 12,000 in our conducted study seven days.
  • On 27th July 2021, the seven-day moving average of cases reported over 60,000. 

This case rate is similar more like the rate of cases we had already seen earlier before the availability of vaccines widely.

Secondly, our new data began to increase that the variant of the delta was more infectious and was leading to higher transmissibility compared to other variants of this infection, even in those persons who are fully vaccinated.

This includes recently presented data from the centers for disease control and our public health partners, unpublished surveillance data available to the public in the coming weeks.

Delta variant is the main strain predominantly of the virus in the United States. 

 

Vaccines availability...

Vaccines available in the United States are highly effective, including against the variant of Delta.

The COVID-19 vaccines, which are authorized in the United States of America, are highly effective in controlling severe disease and death rates, including against the delta variant. 

But they are not a hundred percent effective, and some fully vaccinated persons will become infected with this infection(called a breakthrough infection) and experience symptoms of illness. 

For such types of persons, the vaccine still gives them strong protection against serious illness and death.

 

Importance of Masks...

Given what we know about the variant of Delta, vaccine effectiveness, and current vaccine coverage, layered prevention strategies, such as wearing masks, are very important to reduce the transmission of this Delta variant.

At this time, as we build the level and standard of vaccination countrywide, we must also apply all the necessary preventive strategies available to us, including wearing a mask in indoor public places, to stop this transmission and helps to stop this epidemic.

Vaccines are having a significant role in controlling the spread of the virus and minimizing severe disease.  Although these vaccines are highly effective, they are not fully perfect, and there will always be a risk of vaccine breakthrough infections. 

 

Millions of Americans are already vaccinated, and this number is growing day by day. This means that even though the chances of risk of breakthrough infections is less, there will be millions of fully vaccinated persons who become infected and can infect others, especially with the increasing spread of the variant of Delta. 

Low vaccination coverage in many parts of the world is driving the current rapid and large surge in cases associated with the variant of delta infection, which also increases the risk of chances that even more concerning variants could emerge.
