Beijing: On Wednesday, Chinese authorities enforced lockdowns on 600,000 residents in the vicinity of the largest iPhone manufacturing in the world after workers raised concerns about erratic Covid controls there.
The Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone in central China issued a statement stating that everyone, with the exception of Covid-prevention volunteers and vital personnel, "must not leave their dwellings except to undergo Covid tests and emergency medical treatment."
The action was taken after pictures of individuals escaping the factory, which is run by Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn and produces goods for Apple, surfaced on Chinese social media last week.
The bad working conditions, a lack of supplies, and having to leave the factory on foot to escape Covid transport limits were all complaints made online by employees. At its Zhengzhou plant, Foxconn claims that there are currently more than 200,000 employees.
One 30-year-old employee of Foxconn told AFP that "being paid is not important now, the most important thing is to survive," adding that he was staying at the factory out of fear of escalating an outbreak in his village.
The employee, who wished to remain unnamed, said: "The anti-virus procedures on campus are shambolic, virus-negative people are living together with virus-positive people."
He criticised the "not satisfying" meals served to workers and the paucity of medicine for sick coworkers.
The last large economy is China.
A large portion of the nation now lives under an ever-changing mosaic of Covid restrictions as a result of new varieties that have taxed local authorities' capacity to put out flare-ups before they spread.
The district in Zhengzhou city said on Wednesday that all businesses would have to operate remotely, with only "important enterprises" being permitted to remain open. Which businesses fit within that category wasn't made clear.
On the streets, only medical and delivery vehicles are permitted.
The more than 600,000 residents of the district will be required to submit to daily nucleic acid tests, the local government announced, announcing that it will "resolutely crack down on all forms of breaches."

The government had additionally committed to set up a hotline for employee counselling and to provide meals on time, according to the newspaper.
Without providing further information, Foxconn stated to AFP on Wednesday that its Zhengzhou park "maintains closed-loop operation."
After videos on social media showed employees wandering down highways with their suitcases, the corporation announced at the weekend that it was assessing workers every day and providing transportation for those who wanted to quit.
On Tuesday afternoon, a line of employees wearing hazmat suits could be seen moving toward the workers lugging their suitcases down an empty road, according to video that a Foxconn employee provided to AFP.
According to senior analyst Ivan Lam of Counterpoint Research, the Zhengzhou facility produces the iPhone 14 in an amount that approximates 80% of the total.
An AFP inquiry for comment received no immediate response from Apple.
Foxconn employees have been requested by local governments in the region surrounding Zhengzhou city to register with the police if they decide to return home and to fulfil a quarantine period of several days.
On Tuesday, the business also announced that it would treble bonuses for workers who agreed to stay at the factory throughout the outbreak.
Chinese social media users claimed on Wednesday that Zhengzhou authorities had "performatively" lifted the Covid ban after the city said a day earlier that "normal production and life" will resume.

For the third day in a row, China recorded more than 2,000 new domestic infections on Wednesday.

With breakouts in more than 50 locations, according to analysts Capital Economics, the number of people in quarantine in China is at its highest level since the Shanghai lockdown in the spring.
