It has been established that nature and cultivation should not be regarded as enemies or complete opposites, but as two interconnected facts that work together to form the human experience. Nature was created for breeding.
Several recent and notable studies have documented the effects that childhood experience can have on the physical and chemical structure of the brain. In particular, child neglect can permanently change a person's physique. These physical changes can cause a person to become depressed or anxious later in life.
Unprecedented results from a major study of depressed women in the US have shown that women who have been mistreated inn childhood have abnormally increased hormonal responses to stress compared to women who have no history of vulnerability. This suggests that childhood depression is associated with persistent hyperactivity of the hormonal systems associated with the stress response and may lead to a greater likelihood of mental disorders in adolescence.
The study, led by Dr. Charles Nemoroff at Emory University, looked at women suffering from clinical depression who were mistreated in childhood; Women depressed by past mistreatment; And healthy women. Each person was provided with a moderately stressful experience and was asked to present general math problems aloud to a rigorous non-expressive panel of judges.
Cortisol and ACTH (two hormones that play an important role in an individual's stress response) are measured in each subject as they complete the task. Levels of these hormones have been found to be particularly pronounced in women who have been mistreated in childhood and are currently suffering from depression. In fact, their ACTH response indices are six times higher than healthy women.
In addition to high levels of stress hormones, other studies in the same group have found that the hippocampus of the brain is abnormally developed in women who have been mistreated in childhood, indicating another physiological consequence of early mistreatment. This can lead to permanent brain abnormalities later in life.
Other brain structures can also be affected by pre-existing neglect. Occurs when the basic unit of the brain is born, the neural pathways for the body's response to various experiences are still developing.
The first three years of a child's life are a very critical time, during which time most of these pathways are formed. If a child initially receives negative stimuli, the ways to form lasting relationships and respond to positive experiences may be blocked or destroyed. Although this is a response that helps the child’s survival, it can cause permanent hardship to the individual.
Other research shows that children with severe neglect are smaller than the average brain with undeveloped areas in the cortex. Its long-term effects are still being investigated, but it shows that nutrition or its absence can affect another person's biological structure.
The knowledge that nature and nutrition are two important factors for a person’s health will undoubtedly prove to be a very useful tool in the research and treatment of mental illness and may lead to more effective treatments in the future. so the neglected children must be provided proper check up and treatment.
