The other day I heard an advertisement or more accurately a solicitation for volunteers to help anyone who is having trouble staying asleep. The commercial was a call-out to all those who wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep. They were saying that if you have that problem, give us a call and be part of this study so we can find a drug to fix this terrible problem.
What a crock! Yes, they can develop a drug that will knock you out so you don’t wake up, but you won’t hear the doorbell or the smoke alarm go off either. So the question should be do you want to take a drug to knock you out or would you rather fix the problem by identifying what is causing the problem. When a patient tells me they can fall asleep without a problem but they can’t stay asleep…it is a blood sugar problem! The reason they wake up and can’t fall back asleep is that their blood sugar dropped so much in the middle of the night due to either; NOT enough good protein and fat in their last meal.
Their adrenals are too fatigued to help balance their blood sugar at night or both. Or let us add another….they ate a late-night snack that was loaded with refined carbs, which causes your blood sugar to rise and then fall in the middle of the night. The reason it is a blood sugar problem (check out "online health quiz for blood sugar) is that at night when your blood sugar is falling – your adrenals will kick in and release cortisol to raise your blood sugar. The primary fuel for your brain is glucose, which is then broken down into versions of sugar and carbohydrates.
As your blood sugar drops, your brain doesn’t function as well, which is why we get cravings, irritability, mood swings, etc…But the body or more accurately the adrenals respond by releasing cortisol to raise our blood sugar at night, but if the adrenals are exhausted and it can’t make cortisol. It will instead make adrenaline. Adrenaline will raise your blood sugar just like cortisol will. The only difference is that adrenaline is also a stimulatory neurotransmitter (brain messenger). This means it will raise your blood sugar but also stimulate or excite your brain. This is why so many people say, "I wake up and my mind is just thinking about all kinds of things, I guess I am always thinking?" It’s not that you are always thinking it is the fact that your adrenals glands and your blood sugar aren’t functioning properly.
So the best advice is don’t eat refined junk foods at night. Eat half a NatraLean health bar an hour or so before going to bed. It will help keep your blood sugar stable for a longer period. Support your adrenals with Adrenal Fuel. And most importantly get some good quality protein and fat in the evening. Lastly, if you are having trouble falling asleep. It is an adrenal problem! You are overstimulating them. You need help balancing those chemical brain messengers that help you calm down and relax, which is what the Neuro Calm does.
