At least 20 new patients in Maharashtra were detected with BA.2.75, the new subvariant of Omicron, on Thursday. With this, the tally of patients with BA.2.75 infections has reached 30.
This comes at a time when the state reported 2,678 new coronavirus cases and eight pandemic-related deaths, an official release said.
The report released by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) Nagpur, said that 20 new patients of BA.2.75 have been found in Nagpur division. All these samples were taken during the period between June 15 to July 5, 2022.
The report states that of 20 new BA. 2.75 cases, 11 are men and nine women. One patient is below the age of 18 years, nine are in the age group of 19-25 years, six in the age group of 26 to 50 years and four are above 50.

As many as 17 of the 20 patients were vaccinated. All these patients were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and all of them have recovered from the illness, the health department added.
On the other hand, Mumbai recorded 540 new coronavirus cases and two fatalities on Thursday.
NEW CORONA VARIANT

is the second generation subtype of Omicron, the fifth variant of concern as designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO is monitoring the BA.2.75 variant that has been detected in countries like India, though it said it is early days to say if it is more severe or capable of evading immunity.
With 16,678 new Coronavirus infections being reported in a day, India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,36,39,329, while the active cases increased to 1,30,713, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated today.
The death toll climbed to 5,25,454 with 26 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active cases comprise 0.30 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.50 per cent, the Ministry said.
An increase of 2,023 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.99 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 4.18 per cent, according to the Ministry
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,29,83,162, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.20 per cent. (PTI)

MUMBAI: The state recorded six Covid deaths on Sunday even as a 60-year-old woman from Mumbai tested positive for the newer Omicron variant BA.4, taking the tally of such cases to 34.
"In the latest case, the patient tested Covid positive on June 16, but had mild symptoms and recovered in home isolation," said state surveillance officer Dr Pradeep Awate. The tally of Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 in the state has now climbed to 64, including 15 in Pune, four each in Thane, Nagpur and Palghar and three in Raigad.
Of the six deaths, three took place in Mumbai while one each were from Thane, Pune and Gadchiroli. While the daily tally (2,962) in Maharashtra was almost similar to Saturday's, Mumbai's caseload dropped to 761. The city has been detecting less than 1,000 cases for the last three days. Daily hospitalisations, too, dropped below 50 (41) and the daily test positivity rate stood at 6.6% after rising to 20%
