Armenian President Armed Aaryan has resigned. Submitting his resignation letter on Sunday (January 23rd), he said the country's constitution did not give him sufficient powers to exercise power in various matters of the state.
Circadian has been the country's president since 2016.
President Parisian has been embroiled in controversy with Prime Minister Nicole Pashinyan over a number of issues, including the dismissal of the head of the armed forces last year.
The role of the Prime Minister in the country is stronger than that of the President.
"I have been thinking of resigning for a long time. After almost four years of active service, I have decided to step down as president of the republic, Circadian said in a statement posted on the president's official website.
"The question may arise as to why the president failed to influence the political developments that led to the current national crisis. Inevitably, the answer is our constitution. "Some of our basic laws are rooted in our problems."
In a referendum in December 2015, Armenia was transformed into a parliamentary republic, with the presidency significantly reduced.
Circadian did not directly mention any special events or problems in his statement.
After a six-week bloody war with Azerbaijan in 2020, Armenia agreed to a Russian-brokered ceasefire. Russia agreed to a ceasefire last November after a war with the same neighbor.
Under the Russian-brokered 2020 agreement, Azerbaijan regained control of territory it lost in the war in the early 1990s. Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan has been the subject of constant protests over the terms of the agreement.
Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. However, the country relies heavily on Russia for relief cooperation and investment. Many Armenians have accused the government of corruption and mismanagement of the economy.
