PROTECTION FROM GERMS:
Vaccinations give two forms of immunity. It can be either active immunity or passive immunity. In active immunity, it uses dead or weekend germs that have grown in hen's eggs or laboratory animals. Passive immunity results from inoculation with a serum, usually from an animal which has developed immunity to the disease. It can also be given by using a similar, less dangerous live germ. Inoculation is the process in which boosters are needed to provide continuing protection against infection, For example, in the case of protection against smallpox people were injected with a milder disease called cowpox.
Disease that can be prevented by vaccinations are diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DTP), polio, mumps, chickenpox, scarlet fever, rabies, cholera, typhus fever, yellow fever, plague, whooping cough, smallpox, typhoid, measles, TB and German measles. Some vaccinations need booster doses, some do not. Some vaccines contain dead bacteria or virus, others contain toxic - chemically modified toxins (poisonous) normally produced by the disease - causing germs. Other vaccine contain live germs that are very closely related to the disease - producing germs.
Cancer is a disease in which certain groups of cells start multiplying without control and destroy the healthy tissues. Cancer is known as a killer disease, because so far no effective treatment has been discovered for it. Thousands of people in the world die of cancer every year. Cancer cells can break away from the tumor and be carried through the blood - stream. These 'breakaway cells' settle in other parts of the body and multiply to produce more tumors. Some cancers are caused through heredity. Lung and throat cancers are more common among smokers than in others. Lung cancer occurs mostly in men. Breast cancer and uterus cancer are common among women. There are three different modes of treatment of cancer surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Though there are some kinds of treatment, later they find the laser beams.
One latest development in the field of cancer treatment is an injection of chemicals or viruses which seek out and destroy cancerous cells without touching healthy cells. Photo dynamic therapy by laser beams is also becoming quite effective in treating cancer.
THE IDEAL SCHEDULE OF VACCINATION FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN IS:
Age
2-3 months First DPT and sabin oral vaccine
4-5 months Second DPT and second sabin vaccine
5-6 months Third DPT and third sabin vaccine
1 year Tuberculin test
1 1/4 years Measles, mumps and German measles vaccinations
1 1/2 years DPT, polio vaccine boosters
4-6 years DPT booster and tuberculin test.
