Why are beans the solution to many of the world's problems?

 

 

Beans help improve soil and water quality by reducing the need for fertilizers thanks to their nitrogen-fixing ability, translating into savings of $8-12 billion for the agricultural industry.

With nearly 40,000 different varieties, beans are extremely versatile, nutritious, affordable, and great for the environment. Humanity faces many existential threats, from climate change to malnutrition to the rising cost of basic living.  

Legumes are botanically a vegetable and come in many different shapes and sizes, from fresh beans and peas to dried seeds like lentils and chickpeas. If you don't know if you should have them on your plate as a vegetable or as a protein, the answer is that they can be both.   

For example, peas and green beans are considered starchy vegetables, while kidney beans, snap beans, and chickpeas are members of both food groups due to their high protein content.   

Not only are they a cheaper alternative to animal products, but they are also low in fat, nutrient-dense, and high in protein, iron, zinc, and fiber. Plus, they contain indigestible carbohydrates that become food for bacteria in the colon, making them great for our intestines.  

All legumes contain a mixture of essential amino acids, and among them, soy stands out for having the optimal proportion for our health. Some are not balanced, but around the world, they are traditionally mixed with other foods to make nutritious dishes. Like bean burritos, dal chawl, dal, and chapatti, etc.

Although beans are known for their role in creating gas, they can also do the opposite.  

Legumes play a unique and important role in important ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The bacteria on its roots take nitrogen from the atmosphere and deposit it in the soil.

In general, though, pulses can't be expected to cure all the world's ills, but they should, given their incredible abundance, nutritional value, environmental benefits, and countless delicious ways to eat them. You can reduce them.
