Antibodies Aren't Omicron's Only Weapon of Defense. This is why: 

Antibodies are important, but they aren't the only game in town.

Washington: One important component of the human immune system has gotten a lot of attention in the fight against the coronavirus: antibodies. 

These Y-shaped proteins have lately made headlines because, in comparison to previous strains, Covid-19 shots don't create as many of them that act against the extensively altered Omicron version — at least not without a booster. 

Antibodies, which have been trained by both immunizations and infection, latch on to the spike protein on the coronavirus's surface, preventing it from penetrating cells and harming the host. However, while antibodies are well-deserved, they aren't the only game in town. 

According to Harvard immunologist Roger Shapiro, "there's a complicated and coordinated reaction that is really wonderful from an evolutionary standpoint." 

Here are some crucial aspects to consider:

  • The Innate Immune System's Carpet Bombers:

Signaling proteins send out alarms to enlist the tough-but-dim brutes of the "innate" immune system minutes and hours after the virus first comes calling. 

Neutrophils, which make up 50 to 70 percent of all white cells and are eager to fight but also to die, are the first on the scene. 

Others include greedy "macrophages" that eat viruses and spit out important information to help educate their wiser colleagues, as well as menacingly titled "Natural Killer" cells and "dendritic" cells that pass on information to more elite fighters. 

"It's like carpet bombing the entire area in the hopes of causing as much damage to the invader as possible... while simultaneously phoning in to get your SEAL troops ready to deploy," said John Wherry, an immunologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Intelligence officers and trained assassins make up the B and T cells. 

The "adaptive" immune system kicks in if the invaders aren't pushed away. 

After a few days of infection, "B cells" recognise the threat and begin producing antibodies. 

Vaccination also primes and prepares B lymphocytes, which are mostly found in lymph nodes in our armpits around the injection site. 

Shapiro compared them to CIA operatives who have access to critical threat information. Antibodies that are characterised as "neutralising" are like chewing gum stuck to the business end of a key, preventing it from unlocking a door. Other, less well-known antibodies aren't as sticky as neutralising antibodies, but they nonetheless aid in grabbing hold of the virus, dragging it towards immune cells, or signalling for support and boosting the overall response.

  • T cells, which can be divided into "helpers" and "killers," are B cells' main companions. 

"Killers are like assassins, and they go for the sick cells," Shapiro explained, "but these assassins also cause collateral harm for the greater good." 

"They're like generals," Shapiro explained, marshalling troops, encouraging B cells to produce more, and directing their lethal counterparts toward the enemy.

  • Putting an End to Serious Illness 

The Omicron variety may be more susceptible to neutralising antibodies provided by past infection or immunisation due to its extensively altered spike protein. 

The bad news is that this increases the risk of symptomatic infection. T cells, on the other hand, aren't deceived nearly as easily. 

According to Wherry, T cells have a "periscope" into infected cells, which allows them to look for the virus's constituent parts during its replication cycle. 

Even if their cunning disguises get them past antibodies, they're considerably better at spotting tell-tale signals of opponents they've faced previously. 

Killer T cells go on a search-and-destroy mission, poking holes in infected cells, busting them apart, and activating reactions that send inflammatory proteins called "cytokines" into the fight.

A vaccinated individual with a breakthrough infection may experience mild, cold-like symptoms or moderate, flu-like symptoms, depending on the pace of the reaction, but the risk of serious disease is much reduced. 

None of this changes the fact that boosters increase the production of all types of antibodies while also appearing to train B and T cells. 

"Omicron is alarming," Wherry said, "but the glass is still half-full — it won't completely elude our replies."
