Americans are known for looking for slow-moving roads and, in many cases, continuing to walk even when the road is over. More than 50 million Americans were off the streets in 2005, an increase of 42 percent since 2000.
For off-roading fans, there are two things to consider when taking dirt and rocky driving off the road: safety and the environment. Safety starts with having the right equipment — a car designed for uneven, unpredictable terrain and sturdy, reliable tires that can take the punishment of dirt, stones, ravines and more. And by following the environmental guidelines, you can help ensure that the tracks will be fun for other entertainment lovers.
Safety Tips
1 Inform the person where you are going and when you expect to return.
2 Make sure your car is well stocked with fuel.
3 Walk at a safe pace with the current conditions.
4 Walk straight up and down the hills — never crossing the surface of the hill; it can cause your car to slide sideways or overturn.
5 Move large stones or other obstacles slowly, at an angle, one wheel at a time.
6 Cross the canyons at an angle of 45 degrees.
7 Only cross the river at a designated crossing point.
8 Never turn on narrow roads, steep slopes or on unstable soils.
9 Avoid standing on tall grass or brush, which can be burned by engine heat.
10 Reduce tire pressure to improve drag in difficult off-road conditions.

1 Call only where allowed.
2 Keep a trash can in your car and collect trash that others have left behind.
3 Climb in the middle to minimize route expansion.
4 Avoid slipping and spinning wheels to avoid erosion.
5 Stay away from wild animals.
6 Avoid sensitive habitats: wetlands, wetlands, tundra, etc.
7 Clean your car after riding to reduce the spread of harmful weeds.
8 Be careful with proper waste disposal.
Top routes
To highlight some of the best off-road routes in the country, BFGoodrich Tires, in partnership with Tread Lightly and United Four Wheel Drive Associations, has launched its Outstanding Trails program. The plan is aimed at the efficient use and maintenance of these off-road routes and will assist in the effort to maintain these routes.
“Last year, over 50 million people wanted to have fun driving off the road; the game is growing in popularity, ”said Kaz Holley, product director of BFGoodrich Tires. “Each of the highlights of this program is amazing, and it incorporates the best of the best. The BFGoodrich Tires and these Outstanding Routes are very similar in nature - both are solid and both are fun to drive. "
The plan identifies North America's top five routes. From the desolate desert to the high peaks and ridges, these trails differ in strength and beauty.
After a careful selection process, the five “best” North American roads were chosen separately, the type of area and the following candidate:
• The Black Bear Pass, near Ouray, Colo., Is a scenic route located in the mountains of San Juan.
• Pyeatt Draw, a charming and fun way to be found in Payson, Ariz.
• Hell’s Revenge, with its slippery sandstone slopes, brings a pleasure-seeking journey to Moab, Utah.
• The Historic Naches Pass, also known as the Longmire Wagon Train, takes off-road drivers over the Cascade Mountains in Naches, Wash.
• The Upper Tellico Trail, Trail # 4, located in the Nantahala National Forest, is located at the junction of Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.
As part of the program, BFGoodrich Tires will host a number of events on selected routes to highlight the uniqueness of each area and to teach travelers how to use each route effectively. The company will also provide funding for a selected off-road club to help with the costs associated with route maintenance.
