WHY AGNIPATH

The Agni path scheme was approved by the Indian Government in June 2022. The scheme is for both male and female aspirants of age group 17.5 to 21 years. The recruitment through this scheme is twice a year for the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The posts available are below the officer cadre. The Agni path scheme is the only route to serve in the military.

The primary goal of the national government is to implement this Indian Army Agni path Entrance Program in order to train young people and reduce retirement & pension costs. The scheme was previously named “Tour of Duty” but it was later renamed Agnipath. The recruits named Agni veers serve for a tenure of four years that includes training for six months followed by 3.5 years deployment. After retirement from the service, they will have the opportunity to apply to continue in the armed forces. Not more than 25 percent of the total strength of the retiring batch will be selected for the permanent cadre. Personnel who retire after 4 years of service will not be eligible for pension, but will receive a lump sum amount of approximately ₹11.71 lakh at the end of tenure. The Indian government plans to recruit 45,000 to 50,000 new personnel every year through this scheme.

* Need for this scheme :
In 2020, Late Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rabat came up with an idea to lower the budget. So the main idea of Short Term Recruitment was of him. The Defense Force Pension and other accommodations cover the major amount of the budget. Then it all started in the pandemic, when the whole country was in lockdown. The authority could not start the recruitment process because of it. As a result, there is a shortage of soldiers in the Army. Navy and Air Forces also needed immediate recruits. Now, the authority has launched this scheme which will reduce all the above-mentioned processes.

* Objectives :
The Short Term Recruitment will increase patriotism, great teamwork, good physical fitness, and entrenched loyalty.

The 6 months training will strengthen the national security at the time of external threats, natural disasters, etc.

The scheme will play a crucial role in increasing the efficiency as well as the effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

To reduce the increasing budget because of pension and other accommodations.

* Why protest happen
The protests started in Bihar, and have now spread to Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and other states. Defense aspirants are unhappy with the changes introduced under the Agni path recruitment scheme. Students are raising their concerns over the term, no pension provisions for those who exit early, and the age restriction that makes many of them ineligible.

Advantage :
  • This is a unique policy of the youth to serve the country.

There is an attractive financial package for all the Agni veers.

Availability of well-disciplined and skilled youth with military ethos in civil society.

The best opportunity for all the Agni veers to train in the best institutes.

Armed force profile to be youthfully and dynamic

* Disadvantage :

The Agni path scheme will provide employment to the candidates only for 4 years.

Only 25% of the candidates will be made permanent after the training period, and the other 75% will have to leave the job.

There will no pension for the candidate appointed during the Agni path Scheme 2022.

This recruitment is only for 17.5-21 years of candidates.
