    Why a Mobile Gaming Saw A 40 Percent Spike In India Post COVID


       Driven by strong smartphones, there was a 40 per cent jump in hardcore mobile players in India in the post-pandemic period, a new report showed on Wednesday. Mobile gaming in India is seeing a healthy growth of 16 percent (on-year) and compared to the pre-Covid era, there is more than a 100 percent uptick in paid gaming.

         Three out of every five players scored 31-120 minutes in a regular play session and on average, each player scored 79 minutes in a regular play session, according to Cyber Media Research (CMR). “Hyper-casual gamers have, over the past two years, switched or upgraded to new smartphones, and this is reflected in increased gaming time,” said prabhu ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (HIIG), CMR.

 

     Nearly 86 percent of players are satisfied with a smartphone now as a gaming device. “Smartphone games are increasingly becoming social, with gamers connecting with friends and family through games,” Satya Mohanty, Head-Industry Consulting Group (HICG)CMR.

 

    The average number of games installed on a smartphone stands at 7, of which at least 4 games are played regularly. Three in every five players play action / adventure games. Hardcore players usually play, or prefer action, with first -person shooter games, the findings show. Two out of every three hardcore players have participated in online gaming contests, with a 10 percent YoY growth in gamer participation. Hardcore gamers participate, on average, in eight annual online gaming contests, the report said.

    Some of the most popular game titles played include Counter Strike,Star Craft II, League of Legends, and Rocket League. “Four out of every nine hardcore gamers have played cloud-based games on their smartphones, with the familiarity of cloud games driven by Sony PlayStation (PS Now), Microsoft Xbox Game Pass and Google Stadium.

    At CyberMedia Research (CMR), our gaming intelligence attributes this spike in hardcore and enthusiast gaming to powerful smartphones across the mid and lower price tiers. Hyper-casual gamers have, over the past two years, switched or upgraded to new smartphones, and this is reflected in the increased game time. At the core of these democratized gaming experiences in the value-for-money smartphone segment are, amongst others, the powerful smartphone processors,” said Prabhu Ram, Head- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research.
               Increasing mobile gaming maturity, evidenced in increased game time, and thanks to powerful smartphones, the number of hardcore gamers has seen a stupendous 40% growth in the post-COVID period. A similar growth trend is observed in the case of casual gamers, while the proportion of hyper-casual gamers declined 16% YoY. As per the CMR survey insights, 86% gamers are satisfied with their current smartphone as a gaming device.

    “Our survey results illustrate that smartphone gaming is increasingly becoming social, with gamers connecting with friends and family over gaming. Alongside, gamers have attributed gaming to support in improving their concentration, and, making them more informed about the world outside,” added Satya Mohanty,Head-Industry Consulting Group (ICG), CyberMedia Research.
