Scoliosis is a medical condition that refers to the lateral or lateral curve and spinal deformity. There are different types and causes of scoliosis. Congenital scoliosis is a condition that develops after birth while idiopathic scoliosis begins as a second symptom of another condition. Scoliosis can affect anyone and serious conditions can be physically debilitating. Scoliosis causes the spine to develop or bend in a C-shape or in some directions. It is usually painful but some conditions during puberty do not cause much discomfort other than obvious physical or bone imbalance. Celebrities diagnosed with scoliosis include Isabella Rosellini, Renee Russo, Liza Minelli, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
To get a proper diagnosis, one should consult an orthopedic specialist in spinal cord and orthopedic surgery. The orthopedic surgeon will usually ask a patient to perform the following tests:
Physical Examination - Your doctor will examine your back, chest, waist, legs, and even the skin. The doctor will check for any abnormalities or inconsistencies in your shoulders, legs, and chest. Specifically, the doctor will check to see if your head is resting on your shoulders, and whether the opposite sides of your body are looking. Another easy way to get scoliosis is to check that the legs of your pants are falling off at the same length.
X-ray - If you have unusual, persistent lower back pain or severe spinal curvature, your doctor will ask you to take an x-ray examination. An x-ray of your back will give a detailed image of the spine and curvatures.
Curve Measurement - Using an X-ray image, the doctor will measure the curve and determine what type of treatment or treatment is needed based on the degree of curvature. Curves above 20 degrees require immediate treatment, which may include surgery.
Types of treatments for scoliosis
There are various treatments and treatments for scoliosis, as shown below:
Bonding - This is recommended for children or adolescents who swing to 30 degrees or higher. Bracing allows the spine to be held in a straight position and prevents the continuation of the curve.
The brace will not make your spine straight but will help improve posture and reduce bending. The standard brace is called the Milwaukee Brace which consists of a vertical strap attached to the pads and placed on the hips, ribs and neck; and a plastic Underarm Brace and placed near the ribs, abdomen, and hips. Bracing is also prescribed for other types of neuromuscular diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy.
Surgery - If bracing fails to produce the desired results, surgery is often regarded as the next step. Bracing may not work for everyone. The main purpose of the surgery is to connect the bones in your curve and then adjust the vertebrae. The surgical procedure is called spinal fusion.
Coping with scoliosis
To deal with scoliosis, some patients receive a similar massage or therapy that helps improve body coordination, flexibility, and posture. Exercising in the water can also improve the posture and balance of a scoliosis patient. Acupuncture is also used as an alternative to reducing the pain and discomfort caused by scoliosis.
Your body does not need to stop rotating just because you have a spinal problem. Scoliosis patients can still live happy, active lives. People with scoliosis may still be able to participate in sports and other physical activities. Remember, physical fitness is important for people with back and spine problems
