COLOMBO (News 1st) – On the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council's 50th session, Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.
Minister Peiris informed High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet of Sri Lanka's continuing active engagement with the international system, particularly the Human Rights Council, in a candid and transparent manner, during their meeting.
Local mechanisms such as the Office of Missing Persons, the Office for Reparations, the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation, the SDG Council, and independent institutions such as the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka have all achieved positive results on the ground, according to the Foreign Minister.
The High Commissioner was advised by Foreign Minister Peiris that the invitation to visit Sri Lanka on an official basis that had been extended previously is still valid. He also sent his best wishes on her forthcoming retirement, which was announced at the start of the current session.
He also shared photos from the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on External Affairs with Indian lawmakers. The meeting was also attended by India's Ministers of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, Meenakshi Lekhi, and Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.
The Foreign Minister commended China for its long-term support to Sri Lanka during his meeting with Ambassador Chen Xu, China's Permanent Representative. Minister Peiris expressed gratitude for the considerable amounts of food, pharmaceutical products, and COVID-19 vaccinations provided by China when discussing the country's economic concerns, particularly issues connected to foreign reserves and their influence on food and energy security. The two countries' long-standing and amicable relationship was mentioned, along with the hope of further enhancing ties in the future. Foreign Minister Peiris and Australia's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Amanda Gorely, discussed Ms Claire O Neil, Australia's Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security's impending visit to Sri Lanka.
While expressing interest in meeting with the Home Affairs Minister, the Foreign Minister assured the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka's sustained commitment to combating illegal migration, which the country regards as a humanitarian disaster.
Minister Peiris recommended that medications and healthcare equipment be delivered to Sri Lanka as soon as possible during his meeting with Jagan Chapagain, the Secretary-General of the International Federation of the Red Cross. The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of economic diplomacy, particularly commerce, investment, and tourism, in his conversation with Ambassador Lotte Knudsen, the European Union's Permanent Observer.
Ambassador Walid Khalid Obedat, Coordinator of the Arab League and Jordan's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Taeho Lee, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea, Ambassador Natalie Olijslager, Netherlands' Charge d' affairs, and Ambassador Hans-Peter Jugal, Germany's Deputy Permanent Representative met with the Foreign Minister.
On the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council's 50th session, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretary-General of the International Federation of the Red Cross, and the Permanent Representatives of China, the European Union, Australia, Republic of Korea, Germany, Netherlands, and Jordan in Geneva.
