A person from Bolivia reveals how he survived in the Amazon jungle for 31 days after getting lost, eating insects, and drinking rainwater.
Jonathan Acosta, a 30-year-old from Northern Bolivia, was separated from his four friends during a hunting trip and subsequently became lost in the jungle.
Acosta claims that in order to survive, he drank rainwater that collected in his boots and ate insects, hiding from jungle predators such as jaguars and boars.
After a month of being missing, a team made up of local residents and friends set out to find Acosta and eventually located him.
Tears streaming down his face, Acosta said, "It's unbelievable, I can't believe people were searching for me for so long."
He told the television station Unitel TV, "During that time, I ate insects, you wouldn't believe what I had to do to survive."
Acosta relied on jungle fruits and insects for sustenance during his ordeal.
"I thank God infinitely because he has given me a new life," said Acosta.
"Their family said that they are still gathering all the details of how Jonathan got lost and how they managed to survive during that period. However, they will ask them slowly because they are going through psychological issues after this bitter experience.
At the time spent in the jungle, Jonathan Acosta had lost 17 kilograms of weight, and when he was found, his leg was broken, and his body had suffered from dehydration. However, according to those who found him, despite all these difficulties, Jonathan was limping on his own.
Jonathan's younger brother Horacio Acosta told a Bolivian newspaper that "My brother told us that when his leg broke on the fourth day, they lost all hope," adding that "My brother only had one cartridge in his shotgun, so they couldn't hunt, and they thought no one would find them."
When Jonathan got lost, he had no light or torch, and he had to store rainwater in his shoes to drink. He also told his relatives that he had encountered jungle animals, including a jaguar.
According to Jonathan's younger brother, he had gone to the Bolivian rainforests to scare off the "peccaries," wild pig-like forest animals that are frightening.
After being lost for 31 days, they spotted a search team about 300 meters (980 feet) away and began limping towards them through thorny bushes, while the search team kept calling out to them to get their attention.
According to Horacio Acosta, four local men searched for his brother. He said, 'A man came running towards us and told us that he had found my brother. It's a miracle.'
He added that Jonathan had decided to give up hunting after the ordeal. About his brother's guitar, he said, 'He will play music to praise God. He made a promise to God, and I think he will keep his promise.'
Darien police said they would speak to the four friends of the survivor who had been separated from him, to learn how they became separated. According to them, "Jonathan has decided to give up hunting after this ordeal."
They also shared about their guitar-playing brother, saying, "He will play music to praise God. He had made a promise to God, and I think he will keep his promise."
The Durango police said that they would ask the four friends of the survivor how they got separated.
