Today artwork celebrates Rostand's literary brilliance, according to the Google Doodle, which says, "More than a century later, his endearing stories are still performed and resonated with hopeless romantics around the world."   Who was Edmond Rostand, and what is the play of Cyrano de Bergerac about? 

Edmond Rostand was born in Marseille, France, in 1868. He came from a wealthy, cultured family - his father was a poet, economist and member of scientific societies. Rostand studied literature, history and philosophy at a college in Paris and wrote his first play at the age of 20. The play was a one-act comedy called Le G ANT Rouge, staged at the CLU NY Theater in 1888. But it was not until 1894 that the playwright had his first successes as a playwright with his satirical play Les Romanesques, a parody of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The play was hugely popular both in France and internationally, and Rostand became a prominent figure in the theater world.

In 1897 Edmond Rostand produced his most famous play, Cyrano de Bergerac, which remains one of the most popular plays in France to this day. It has since been performed and adapted - most recently with the 2021 film Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage, and a revival of the play starring James McEvoy, which premiered in London earlier this year. Cyrano de Bergerac was a real person, and the play is a fictionalization of his life.

 He  was a French satirist and playwright, born in Paris in 1619, and had a remarkably large nose. The real Cyrano was sent to a university in Paris at the age of just 12, before later enlisting in the French army and becoming an expert in fencing and dueling.  He  served in the Franco-Spanish War and was wounded during the Siege of Arras in 1640. After leaving the army, Cyrano returned to writing, writing plays and pamphlets. In the play Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano is a poet and swordsman who is in love with his cousin Roxanne.

 Though brilliant and charming, Cyrano believes his large nose makes him ugly and cannot tell Roxanne how  he  feels. Meanwhile, Roxanne falls in love with a handsome young nobleman named Christian, who will soon join Cyrano's guard. Cyrano tells Christian about Roxanne's feelings and has the idea that he  will write Roxanne by posing as a Christian, so  he  can secretly express his feelings.
