In Bhishma, to get his father Shantanu married to Satyavati, he made a fierce pledge to observe lifelong celibacy. Seeing such paternity for his father, his father gave him the blessing of death. Their other names are Gangayya, Shantanav, Nadij, Talketu etc. Mahabharata is a mahagatha.
He is also best known for his Bhishma vows, due to which he played the role of guardian of the throne of Hastinapur for a lifetime despite becoming the king. He did not marry for a lifetime and remained a celibate. Following this pledge, he participated in the war on behalf of the Kauravas in the Mahabharata. His wish was a boon of death. He was the first chief commander of the Kauravas. He was the chief commander of the Kauravas for the most ten days. It is said that Draupadi asked Bhishma Pitamah, lying on the bed, that there was a rip-off in front of his eyes and they kept quiet, then Bhishma Pitamah replied that at that time I used to eat salt of Kauravas, because of this my eyes There was no difference in the rip-off of a woman in front of me, but now Arjuna has removed the blood made by eclipsing the salt of the Kauravas after showering the banana, so now I am aware of my sins, so forgive me, Draupadi. Devavrata, popularly known as Bhishma, was a Vasu in his former life. Once some Vasu went to visit Meru with his wives. Maharishi Vasishtha's ashram was on that mountain. At that time, Maharishi Vashistha was not in the ashram, but his beloved cows were tied to the calf Nandini of Kamadhenu. Seeing that cows, the wife of a Vasu named Doyo insisted on taking that cow. By obeying his wife, Dyu Vasu stole the cow from Maharishi Vasistha's ashram. When Maharishi Vasistha came back, he saw the whole incident with divine vision.
Maharishi Vashistha was very angry seeing this work of Vasus and cursed the Vasus that they would have to be born on earth in human form. After this everyone started apologizing to Vasu Vasishtha. On this, Maharishi Vashistha forgave the rest of the Vasus and said that they will soon be freed from human birth, but the Vasu named Doyu will have to live in the world for a long time and will have to suffer.
Devavrata, a disciple of Lord Parasurama, was a very learned and powerful man of his time. According to the Mahabharata, it was impossible to defeat the knowledgeable and brahmachari Devavrata of all kinds of weapons of science in any kind of war. He could possibly have been defeated by his mentor Parashurama, but in the war between the two, Parashurama was defeated and it was stopped by Lord Shiva, assessing the loss caused by the fighting of two very powerful warriors.
