New Delhi: Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani is the 10th richest person in the world, followed by infrastructure tycoon Gautam Adani and his family, who claimed the 11th spot on Forbes' annual world billionaires list. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has dethroned Amazon founder Jeff Bezos this year.
There are 2,668 billionaires in the 36th-annual ranking of the planet's richest people-87 fewer than a year ago. According to the business magazine, "war, pandemic, and sluggish markets" have hit the ultra-wealthy. However, 1,000 billionaires are richer now than they were a year ago.
There are 236 newcomers on the billionaires' list, which America leads with 735 billionaires worth a collective $4.7 trillion.
Both Russia and China have seen dramatic drops in the number of billionaires. According to Forbes, there are 34 fewer billionaires than last year in Russia following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and 87 fewer Chinese billionaires following a government crackdown on tech companies, according to Forbes. The business magazine said the methodology used
to calculate net worth was from March 11, 2022, to March 11, 2023.
It comprised a list of more than 2,000 billionaires worldwide and found over 1,000 billionaires who added to their massive fortunes this year compared to 2021. There are also over 200 first-time billionaires on the extensive list, published Wednesday.
Several notable women made this year’s list as newcomers, including Melinda French Gates of Microsoft with a net worth of $6.2 billion, Trudy Cathy White of Chick-fil-A with $4.6 billion, Grammy-winning singer Rihanna with $1.7 billion from her music and cosmetics, and Jenny Just of Fintech (finance and investments) with $1.5 billion.
According to Forbes, the United States still has the distinction of having the most billionaires worldwide, with 735, and a collective net worth of $4.7 trillion.
The financial global media company used stock prices and exchange rates from March 11 to determine the net worth of the wealthiest individuals.
Forbes has numerous categories for this year’s list, which include the richest individuals, the richest women, and the newest billionaires.
