Kailash sankhala
Kailash Sankhala (1925-1994) was an Indian wildlife conservationist who was known as the Tiger Man of India. He played a very important role in protecting tiger population in India at a time when tigers were hunted.
At the beginning, Sankhala had the job of issuing hunting permits. When he shot and killed a tiger in Rajasthan, he felt very sad and guilty. From that day he decided to work for protecting and not hunting the big cats.
Kailash Sankhala worked as Director of Delhi Zoological Park, Chief Wildlife Warden in Rajasthan and Forest Officer in Bharatpur. He established the Tiger Trust in 1989.
While working in the Indian Forest Service in Rajasthan, Sankhala stopped the practice of making zoo animals perform tricks for the public, urged the ban of shooting wild animals for sport and export of animal skins.!
It was under Sankhala's leadership that the tigers' enclosure in the Delhi Zoo was built to look like real jungles, which are the tigers' natural habitat.
In 1972 World Wildlife Fund formed Operation Tiger for the protection and conservation of tigers. India's Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi launched Project Tiger and made Sankhala its first Director.

Kailash Sankhala has written many books including 'Tiger! The Story of the Indian Tiger' and 'Return of the Tiger' He has written many science articles too. He was also a popular wildlife photographer.
In 1970 Sankhala did a survey of the tiger population in India, under the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship Program. He was the first civil servant to receive the Fellowship and the first Indian field officer to do field research on tigers.
In 1965 Rajasthan gave him the 'Merit Award' for his contribution to wildlife.protection. He also received the Padma Shri, which is India's fourth- highest civilian award, in 1992.
Ministry of Environment and Forests has instituted Kailash Sankhala Fellowship Award for wildlife conservation. Jaipur's Godwan Society gives Kailash Sankhala Desert Conservation Award. A street in Jaipur is named Kailash Sankhala Marg.
