Who is this Coronavirus: Is the newly found NeoCov COVID variant by Wuhan scientists the deadliest of all COVID strains?

Scientists in China have issued a warning about a new coronavirus strain known as NeoCov, which is linked to the Middle East respiratory illness coronavirus MERS-coronavirus. According to the researchers, NeoCoV has the potential to combine the high mortality rate of MERS-CoV (one in every three infected persons dies on average) and the high transmission rate of the present SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

"Furthermore, our analyses suggest that current COVID-19 immunizations are insufficient to protect humans from any infection produced by these viruses," according to a research paper published on the bioRxiv website. The research has not yet been peer-reviewed and is only available as a preprint.

"Given the significant changes in the RBD areas of the SARS-CoV-2 variations, particularly the severely mutated omicron variant," the paper concludes, "these viruses may have a latent potential to infect people through additional adaptation via antigenic drift."

The NeoCoV virus was previously connected to epidemics in Middle Eastern nations in 2012 and 2015. In many aspects, it resembles the COVID-19-causing coronavirus. NeoCoV was discovered in a bat population in South Africa and has only spread among these species.

"However, subsequent alterations could render it potentially dangerous," they say.

"We discovered that NeoCoV and its near sibling, PDF-2180-CoV, may efficiently employ specific forms of bat Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and, less favourably, human ACE2 for entrance in this investigation," the researchers write.

They also stated that antibodies targeting SARS-CoV-2 or MERS-CoV would not be able to neutralise NeoCov infection.

ACE2 is a cell receptor protein that allows the coronavirus to enter and infect a wide range of cells. "Our study indicates the first occurrence of ACE2 usage in MERS-related viruses, giving light on a possible bio-safety concern of the human emergence of an ACE2-using "MERS-CoV-2" with both high fatality and transmission rate," according to the report.

According to Russian news source Sputnik, after being told on NeoCov, specialists at the Vector Russian State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology published a statement on Thursday in response to the publishing.
