M. K. Stalin, the son of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and the President of the DMK, was sworn in as the 8th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after winning a resounding victory Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021. His inauguration took place at Raj Bhavan in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed DMK President M.K. Stalin as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister on May 5, 2021.

M. K. Stalin's Personal Life, Education, and Birth

M. K. Stalin was born on March 1, 1953, in Madras (now Chennai), to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Dayalu Ammal.

He attended Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School and Vivekananda College for his pre-university education. He graduated from Presidency College, Chennai, of the University of Madras with a B. A. in History in 1973. Anna University awarded him Honorary Doctorates on August 1, 2009.

Stalin married Durga on August 25, 1975, and the couple had two children.

Stalin, M. K. Political Career

M. K. Stalin began his political career in his early adolescence. With his pals, he founded the DMK Gopalapuram Youth Wing in a tea shop. At the age of 14, he campaigned for his uncle Murasoli Maran in the 1967 election. He was elected to the DMK's General Committee in 1973.

After being imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for demonstrating against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Emergency in 1976, he rose to notoriety. While protecting him, his fellow DMK prisoner C.Chittibabu died of injuries and police torture.

He founded the DMK youth wing after writing his final year B.A. examinations from prison. He was appointed Secretary of the Wing in 1982 and served in that capacity for more than four decades.

The DMK government, however, was removed before the end of its five-year term in 1991. He ran for the Thousand Lights Assembly Constituency in the 1984 Assembly Election but lost to AIADMK's K.A. Krishnaswamy. He ran again in the 1989 Assembly Election from the same Assembly Constituency, but this time he won. In the 1991 Assembly Election, he ran again from the same Assembly Constituency but was defeated by AIADMK's J. Jayalalithaa. He ran for the Assembly again in 1996, this time from the same Assembly constituency, and was elected as an MLA.

He ran for the first time in his political career in the 2011 Assembly Election from the Kolathur Assembly Constituency, located on the outskirts of Chennai city.

In 1996, he was elected Mayor of Chennai, where he rebuilt the city's infrastructure with initiatives including Singara Chennai (Beautiful Chennai). By this time, he was known as Manager Thanthai (Father of the city). He was re-elected Mayor of Chennai in 2001.

The then-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa, introduced the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Act in 2002, prohibiting a person from holding two elected positions in the government, in what was generally interpreted as an effort to depose Stalin as Mayor of Chennai. The Madras High Court, however, overturned the law. The court, however, decided that a person cannot serve as mayor of Madras (now Chennai) City Municipal Corporation for two consecutive terms under the Madras (now Chennai) City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, even though, unlike Stalin, past mayors were not directly elected. Stalin did not challenge the law in the Apex Court. He was appointed DMK's Deputy General Secretary in 2003.

Tamil Nadu's First Deputy Chief Minister
Stalin served as the Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration in the Government of Tamil Nadu after the DMK won the state assembly election in 2006. During his time in office, he aided self-help groups around the state. He became the treasurer of DMK in 2008.

M. K. Stalin was nominated as the state's Deputy Chief Minister by Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on May 29, 2009. M. Karunanidhi declared Stalin as his heir apparent on January 3, 2013, putting an end to speculation about who would take over the party reins following his death.

He was elected as the Leader of Opposition in the 2016 Assembly Election after winning the Kolathur constituency. M. Karunanidhi, his father, died in 2018.

In the 2019 General Election, he led the Secular Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu, created under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). In the Assembly by-election, the alliance gained 39 out of 40 seats in Parliament and 12 out of 21 seats in the Assembly.

The DMK won 159 of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election of 2021. The state's majority threshold is 118 seats. M. K. Stalin succeeded Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the state's eighth Chief Minister.
