Rohit Gurunath Sharma, born on April 30, 1987, is an Indian cricketer who currently captains the Indian men's cricket team in all formats. He is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen of his generation and is particularly noted for his timing, elegance, six-hitting abilities, and leadership skills. When playing for India, Sharma bats as a right-hander, while he represents Mumbai Indians in the IPL and Mumbai in domestic cricket. In addition, he also serves as the captain of Mumbai Indians, leading the team to five titles, the most by any team.
Sharma has been part of India's winning team in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, playing in both finals. He currently holds the world record for the highest individual score (264) in a One Day International (ODI) match and is the only player to have scored three double-centuries in ODIs. Furthermore, he has the distinction of scoring the most hundreds (five) in a single Cricket World Cup, which earned him the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2019. Rohit Sharma started his List A career for West Zone in March 2005, where he scored an unbeaten 31 in his debut match against Central Zone. He gained recognition for his unbeaten knock of 142 in 123 balls against North Zone during the Deodhar Trophy. He also toured Abu Dhabi and Australia with India A. Sharma made his first-class debut for India A against New Zealand A in July 2006 and scored 57 and 22 in the match. He then made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006-07 season and scored an impressive 205 off 267 balls against Gujarat. He went on to score his highest career score of 309 not out in the Ranji Trophy against Gujarat in December 2009. He has been playing for Mumbai in his entire domestic first-class career and was appointed team captain in October 2013 after Ajit Agarkar's retirement. Although he was included in India's 30-member probables list for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy tournament, he did not make the final squad.
In November 2013, Rohit Sharma made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against West Indies and scored 177, the second-highest score on debut by an Indian to Shikhar Dhawan (187). He scored 111 (not out) in the second Test at his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being out of the Test team since 2017-18, Sharma earned a recall and played in the first Test in Adelaide, scoring 37 and 1 in an Indian victory. He missed the second Test in Perth due to a minor injury but recovered for the Boxing Day third Test in Melbourne and scored 63 (not out) to help India win both the Test and the series. In October 2019, in the third Test against South Africa, Sharma scored his 2,000th run and his first double century in Tests. He was named as vice-captain of India's Test team during the tour of Australia in 2020, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara. Sharma had a successful home series against England in 2021, scoring a century in the second Test at Chennai. He top-scored for his side in both innings of the low-scoring third Test in Ahmedabad.
Rohit Sharma played his first international cricket match against Ireland in Belfast on 23 June 2007, in which he batted at number seven but did not bat as India won the game. He scored his first ODI half-century against Pakistan at Jaipur on 18 November 2007 and was later selected for the Indian squad for the 2007-08 Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia. However, his ODI performances were inconsistent, and he lost his middle-order position to other players. Sharma was later recalled to the ODI team for the tri-nations tournament in Bangladesh in December 2009, where he scored his first ODI century against Zimbabwe on 28 May 2010. Sharma's career revived in 2013 when he was moved up the batting order to open the innings with Shikhar Dhawan in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and since then, he has been an integral part of the Indian cricket team. He holds the world record for the highest score in a one-day international innings, which he achieved on 13 November 2014, playing against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sharma was appointed captain of the Indian cricket team in December 2017 for the series against Sri Lanka.
