Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic moment as he becomes the first American-born pontiff in the Church’s nearly 2,000-year history. He succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025.
Originally from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is 69 years old and brings with him a unique background that blends North American roots with deep pastoral experience in Latin America. He spent over two decades as a missionary in Peru, eventually becoming the Bishop of Chiclayo. Fluent in both Spanish and Italian, his work in the Global South and his understanding of diverse cultures have earned him broad respect within the Church.
Upon his election, Pope Leo XIV delivered an address to the faithful from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, emphasizing unity, peace, and the enduring presence of God. “God loves us, all of us. Evil will not prevail. Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we will go forward,” he said. His words echoed many of the themes championed by Pope Francis, particularly those related to social justice, environmental responsibility, and compassion for the vulnerable.
World leaders responded swiftly and positively to the news. In the United States, President Donald Trump called it a “great honor” for the country, while former President Barack Obama described the moment as “historic” and offered prayers for the new pope’s leadership. In Latin America, leaders expressed both pride and hope. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke of shared values and unity, while Peruvian President Dina Boluarte celebrated the connection between Pope Leo XIV and the people of Peru, calling him a “guide of peace, justice, and love.”
Leaders from other Christian denominations also welcomed the election, offering congratulations and prayers. Many pointed to Pope Leo XIV’s history of dialogue and service as a hopeful sign for future ecumenical cooperation.
