Who is Malavika Hedge

Siddhartha, a Karnataka native, decided to create a coffee shop after witnessing the global coffee culture. He built the first café in Bangalore's Brigade Road in 1996. After all the challenges, the coffee shop opened.

Café Coffee Day was the polestar where a few hours converted into lifelong memories, whether it was a weekend hangout with friends, a first date, or treating your family with your first salary. V G Siddhartha, the founder of India's largest coffee shop chain, Café Coffee Day, committed himself suicide in July 2019, shocking everyone in the country. He drowned near Mangalore after plunging into the Netravati River. After a 36-hour search, his body was discovered on the river.

When Siddhartha was driving to Sakleshpur in his car, he directed his driver to pull over to the side of the bridge and wait for him at the other end till he arrived. When he didn't show up after an hour, the driver contacted him, but his phone was shut off, so he called his older son and informed him that his father was missing, and the search operation began.

Meet Malavika Hedge

Malavika Krishna, the daughter of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, was born in Bengaluru in 1969 and graduated from Bengaluru University with a bachelor's degree in engineering. Malavika Hegde managed to lessen his debt even during the COVID lockdown after Siddhartha's suicide. Many businesses have closed since COVID-19 was released onto the globe. Despite the pandemic, though, Café Coffee Day grew.

Failure to develop a lucrative business model

His last letter hinted that he had committed suicide as a result of a debt crisis and the loss of his business. ANI issued a typewritten statement. Siddhartha seems to be apologizing for "failing to build the correct viable company strategy" in the note. He claimed that pressure from private equity partners and other lenders, as well as harassment from the IRS, had become too much to handle. "My objective was never to scam or mislead anyone, I have failed as an entrepreneur," Siddhartha stated in his note.

CDEL's CEO has been replaced by Malavika Hegde

Many people believed that the Coffee Day company would fail after Siddhartha's death, and there were many uncertainties about who would operate it after him. Because of the accumulating debt, many people feared the corporation would never be able to recover. Despite being a single mother with two sons, Malavika Hegde, V G Siddhartha's wife, has broken all suspicions and achieved a milestone by preserving CCD from extinction.

Malavika took over as CEO of Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd in December 2020. (CDEL). She worked relentlessly for the company's success from that day on. Coffee Day has a debt of approximately Rs 7,000 crore in 2019. This was a big load for Malavika, who had recently lost her husband and was grieving. She, on the other hand, never gave up.

CCD's extraordinary turnaround under Malavika Hegde's leadership

Malavika Hegde managed to lessen his debt even during the COVID lockdown after Siddhartha's suicide. She had previously stated that the hurdles have intensified, but that "somewhere along the way in the last 12 months, my purpose has been to continue Siddhartha's noble legacy." He's given me a task to complete: to settle every lender to the best of my abilities, to expand the company, and to enthuse and develop our staff."

As of March 31, 2019, CDEL had a debt of Rs 7,000 crore. However, according to a statement issued by CDEL in August of last year, the company's management was working diligently to get the company back on track following "significant" debt reductions. As of March 31, 2021, it had a net debt of Rs 1,731 crore, according to its annual report. "The overall loan amounts amounted at Rs 1,779 crore," according to the report, "which includes long-term borrowings of Rs 1,263 crore and short-term borrowings of Rs 516 crore". Without taking a single cent from lenders, the band reduced the debt to Rs 3,100 crore as of March 31, 2020, from Rs 7,200 crore in March 2019.

Coffee Day's debt burden was decreased to Rs 1,731 crore by 2021 as a result of Malavika's initiative. This is a fantastic accomplishment. Malavika's ambition is to turn CCD into a multibillion-dollar corporation free of debt. Malavika's aim is to expand coffee shops to every corner of the country, following in the footsteps of her late husband.
