Cleopatra VII, also known simply as Cleopatra, was one of the most influential and famous queens in ancient history. She was the last active pharaoh of Ancient Egypt and played a pivotal role in its final years before the country became a Roman province. Born in 69 BCE, she ascended to the throne at the young age of 18 and became known for her intelligence, beauty, and political acumen.
Cleopatra was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, descended from Ptolemy I Soter, a general of Alexander the Great who took control of Egypt after Alexander's death. The Ptolemies ruled Egypt as Hellenistic Greeks, preserving many of the Egyptian traditions while adopting Greek culture. As pharaoh, Cleopatra faced numerous challenges, including internal power struggles and external threats from the expanding Roman Republic.
In 48 BCE, a power struggle erupted between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII, leading to a civil war. Cleopatra was eventually forced to flee Egypt, but she sought help from Julius Caesar, the Roman general and statesman. In 48 BCE, she famously smuggled herself into Caesar's presence, concealed inside a carpet, and convinced him to support her claim to the throne. Caesar's military intervention in Egypt ultimately led to the defeat of Ptolemy XIII, and Cleopatra was restored as the ruler of Egypt, now with her younger brother Ptolemy XIV as her co-regent.

Cleopatra and Caesar formed a romantic relationship, and she followed him back to Rome after his victory in Egypt. Their affair scandalized Roman society, and Caesar faced opposition from political rivals who saw Cleopatra as a threat to Roman interests. Despite this, Cleopatra bore Caesar a son, Ptolemy XV, also known as Caesarion.
In 44 BCE, Julius Caesar was assassinated, and Rome was plunged into chaos. Octavian used their relationship as a propaganda tool, portraying Antony as a puppet under the influence of the "Eastern Queen" and a threat to Roman values.
In 31 BCE, Octavian's forces faced Antony and Cleopatra's fleet in the Battle of Actium. Octavian emerged victorious, and the defeated couple fled back to Egypt. Realizing that capture would mean humiliation in Rome, Cleopatra famously took her own life by allowing herself to be bitten by an asp, a venomous snake.
With Cleopatra's death, Egypt became a Roman province, marking the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the ancient Egyptian civilization's independence. Cleopatra's life and tragic end have captured the imagination of countless writers, artists, and historians throughout the ages, making her one of the most enduring and iconic figures in history.
