After Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk intended to create a hip-hop group around RM (Kim Nam-joon), a well-known underground rapper in Seoul, BTS was created in 2010. BTS was initially intended to be a hip-hop group, but after noticing declining record sales, he changed his mind and believed that a different direction would be more commercially successful. He made the decision to create an idol group that would be different from the typical, rigidly structured idol groups by allowing its members to express themselves freely as individuals as opposed to as a group. A launch was anticipated for the next year; therefore, auditions were performed that year. The band members shared a home and put in up to 15 hours a day of practice before their debut performance for a select group of business professionals.
In February 2014, the Skool Luv Affair EP—the concluding installment of BTS's "school trilogy"—was made available. The record peaked at number three on Billboard's World Albums Chart and at the top of the Gaon Album Chart. The tracks "Boy in Luv" and "Just One Day" helped promote the EP. BTS performed at their first fan gathering in Seoul after the release of Skool Luv Affair, choosing the name A.R.M.Y. for the fan club. BTS performed at KCON in Los Angeles in August 2014 after hosting their debut concert in the country in West Hollywood in July.
BTS released the album Dark & Wild in August 2014, and it peaked at number two in South Korea. Two singles, "Danger" and "War of the Worlds," served as its backers.
From October to December 2014, the group undertook their first concert tour, 2014 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet. Wake Up, the band's debut studio album released in Japan, peaked at number three on the Oricon Albums Chart when it was released in December 2014. BTS held their first Japan Tour 2015, Wake Up: Open Your Eyes, in February 2015 following the album's release. The Red Bullet Tour, which had started in South Korea on October 17, 2014, was restarted on June 6 in Malaysia. It then traveled across Australia, North America, and Latin America until coming to a close in Hong Kong that August. 80,000 people saw the full tour in 18 cities across 13 nations.

business success and a breakthrough in the public eye
In the 2015 album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1, BTS explored musical genres other than hip-hop. BTS chose the title "" (Korean: ; RR: Hwayangyeonhwa), which can be loosely translated to mean "youth" metaphorically as "the most beautiful moment in life," to reflect the beauty and anxiety of youth. Their youth trilogy, a triptych of CDs focusing on the hardships of young people, was introduced with this album. The trio won SBS MTV's The Show after their top-five hit single "I Need You" became a hit in South Korea. On Billboard's World Digital Songs Sales Chart, the second song "Dope" (Korean: ; RR: Jjeoreo) peaked at number three.
