The Argentine football player Lionel Messi and the Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo are involved in a sporting rivalry in football called the Messi-Ronaldo or Ronaldo-Messi rivalry. The rivalry is driven by the media and supporters and is primarily based on the players' similar records and athletic accomplishments.[1] While playing for rival teams Barcelona and Real Madrid, they faced off frequently for nine seasons during the height of their careers.
They are now regarded as two of the greatest players of all time because of the numerous historical firsts they have accomplished as a team in the sport. With a combined total of 79 official titles won during their senior careers (Messi 44, Ronaldo 35), they are two of the most decorated football players of all time. They have also consistently broken the 50-goal mark in a single season. They are the only two players who have scored more than 800 goals between them for their respective clubs and nations. The record for most official goals scored in a career is held by Ronaldo.
In an effort to determine who they think is the greatest player in football history or in the present day, journalists and pundits frequently debate the relative merits of each player. Football pundits widely concur that, notwithstanding personal preferences, both of them are the best players of their generation, vastly surpassing peers in performance.[2] Messi is praised for his ability to dribble, create plays, pass, and score goals, whereas Ronaldo has been praised for his physical traits, leadership qualities, and ability to execute under pressure.[3] It has been likened to previousinternational sports rivalries, including the boxing rivalry between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the motorsport rivalry between Prost and Senna, and the tennis rivalries between Federer and Nadal as well as Borg and McEnroe.[4][5][6] Some pundits decide to examine how the two players' different playing philosophies and physiques differ.[7]
