Which type of food products do we get from seeds of mustard plant, Mustard seed sowing up 22%; on this rabi season, says Agriculture Ministry

 

According to the latest data released by the agriculture ministry, the area sown under the rapeseed/mustard seed crop has increased by 22.46 percent to 88.54 lakh hectare, while the coverage under the wheat crop has remained slightly lower so far in the ongoing 2021-22 rabi season, according to the data.

Approximately 325.88 lakh hectares of wheat, the primary rabi crop, had been planted as of Friday, compared to 329.11 lakh hectares during the same period last year, according to the report.

Sowing of rabi crops such as wheat begins in October, with harvesting taking place from April to June.

Total area under oilseeds has expanded dramatically in recent years, reaching 97.07 lakh hectares as of December 31, 2021, up from 80.64 lakh hectares in the same time last year, according to the statistics.

Rapeseed and mustard seed were the most widely planted oilseeds in the period under review, covering a total area of approximately 88.54 lakh hectares, compared to a total area of 72.30 lakh hectares in the previous year. According to the data, the area sown with groundnut remained stable at 3.64 lakh hectare, the area sown with linseed remained stable at 2.57 lakh hectare, the area sown with sunflower remained stable at 1.01 lakh hectare, the area sown with safflower remained stable at 0.68 lakh hectare, the area sown with sesamum remained stable at 0.30 lakh hectare, and the area sown with other oilseeds

The increase in the area under mustard seed crop is a welcome indication for a country that imports 60 percent of its domestic requirements and is battling to keep retail prices under control in the face of a worldwide price rise situation.

 

In the case of other key rabi crops, the area seeded under pulses was marginally lower at 152.62 lakh hectares as of December 31, 2021, as compared to 154.04 lakh hectares in the same time the previous year, according to the latest available data.

Growing gramme, which is the primary rabi pulse, took up a little larger area of 107.69 lakh hectares, as opposed to 105.68 lakh hectares in the previous year's period.

In the ongoing rabi season of the 2021-22 crop year, lentil was sown in a marginally higher area of 16.76 lakh hectare, while field pea was sown in 9.61 lakh hectare, kulthi in 3.34 lakh hectare, urad bean in 5.66 lakh hectare, moong bean in 2.29 lakh hectare, and lathyrus in 3.32 lakh hectare so far (July-June).

Because the overall area under coarse-cum-nutri cereals decreased from 46.19 lakh hectares to 45.05 lakh hectares, there was reduced coverage under coarse-cum-nutri cereals. Jowar sowing has lagged behind, with 23.17 lakh hectares planted so far this rabi season compared to 26.05 lakh hectares in the same period last year, but maize coverage has increased, with 14.80 lakh hectares planted compared to 12.89 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Overall rabi crop area has increased to 634.68 lakh hectares so far in the 2021-22 rabi season, up from 625.04 lakh hectares in the same period the previous year, according to the statistics.
