Packing fresh fruit and vegetables is one of the most important steps in the long and difficult journey from farmer to consumer. Bags, crates, hampers, baskets, boxes, piles of barrels, and containers containing pallets are vessels suitable for handling, transporting and marketing new products. More than 1,500 packages are used for product in the U.S. and the number continues to grow as the industry introduces new packaging materials and concepts. While the industry generally acknowledges that container suspension is one way to reduce costs, the trend in recent years has expanded to include a wide range of package sizes to meet the diverse needs of retailers, consumers, food service consumers, and processing services. Packing and packaging materials incur significant costs in the manufacturing industry; it is therefore important that packers, shippers, buyers, and buyers have a clear understanding of the variety of packaging options available. This fact sheet describes some of the many types of packaging, including their functions, uses, and limitations. Also included is a list, in terms of assets, of the standard production capacity of the industry. Packing Work, or Why Package Produces? Significant percentages of consumer and product complaints may be followed by container failure due to poor design or poor selection and use. A well-designed production container must contain, protect, and identify the product, satisfying everyone from farmer to consumer. PACKAGING POINTS Recallability / Biodegradability. A growing number of U.S. markets and many export markets have limits on waste disposal of packaging materials. In the near future, almost all product packages will be recycled or decomposed, or both. Most buyers of new products are also the ones who are most concerned about environmental issues. Variety. This practice is aimed at greater use of packages by the majority of processors and consumers of supermarkets and smaller consumer packages. There are now more than 1,500 different sizes and styles of product packages. Sales Appeal. High quality images are increasingly being used to enhance sales attraction. Multicolor printing, unique writing, and logos are now commonplace. Shelf life. The packaging of modern products can be customized for each item to extend the shelf life and reduce waste. Storage The container should seal the product in areas suitable for handling and distribution. The products should fit snugly inside the container, with no damaged space. Small round or oblong produce items (such as potatoes, onions, and apples) can be packaged appropriately using different packaging shapes and sizes. However, many who produce such items as asparagus, berries, or soft fruits may require specialized containers. Usually, handmade product packages usually have a limit of 50 pounds. Bulk packages delivered with a fork lift can weigh up to 1,200 pounds. Package Protection should protect the product from mechanical damage and adverse environmental conditions during handling and distribution. In order to produce consumers, broken, tied, or folded products often indicate a lack of care in content management. Production containers must be strong enough to withstand damage during packing, storage, and shipping. Because almost all product packages are palletized, production containers must be strong enough to pack crushing at low, humid temperatures. Although the cost of packaging materials has increased dramatically in recent years, low-quality, lightweight containers that are easily damaged by grip or moisture are no longer tolerated by packers or consumers. A product set for export markets requires the containers to be extremely strong. An air-conditioned product may require special packaging, package sizes, and packaging. Advertisers who submit new products should consult with shipping companies regarding any special packaging requirements. Additionally, the USDA and various export agency agencies may be able to provide specific packaging information. Damage caused by poor environmental control during handling and transportation is one of the main causes of rejected product and low consumer and consumer satisfaction. Each fresh fruit and vegetable has its own requirements for temperature, humidity, and natural gas composition. Product containers should be friendly to production - help maintain a good shelf life span. This may include special products for reducing water loss in the product, thermal insulation materials, or plastic lining designed to retain a good mix of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Identification Package should identify and provide useful information about the product. It is customary (and may be required in some cases) to provide information such as product name, type, size, distance, variety, total weight, number, grower, exporter, and country of origin. It is becoming more and more common to find packaging, healthy food information, recipes, and other useful information directed at the consumer. In consumer advertising, package appearance has also become an integral part of retail outlets. General Product Codes (UPC or barcodes) may be included as part of the label. The UPCs used in the food industry contain a readable 10-digit machine code. The first five digits are the number assigned to a specific manufacturer (packer or consignor) and the second five digits represent the specific product information such as product type and package size. Although no price information is included, UPCs are widely used by packers, shippers, buyers, and Examples of UPC retailers as a quick and easy way to manage inventory and cost calculations. The successful use of the UPCs requires the cooperation of everyone in charge
