Medicinal plants have been utilized for thousands of years, and new ones are discovered all the time. Here are several plant extracts with numerous health benefits.

 

For thousands of years, plants have been exploited to extract medicinal properties. Natural resources such as plants, microorganisms, and animals account for more than one-third of modern drugs, despite the fact that herbal remedies are typically rejected as pseudoscience.

Scientists at Scripps Research Group in California discovered that a substance derived from the bark of the Galbulimima belgraveana tree has psychotropic qualities that could help with depression and anxiety treatment.

 

The tree can only be found in the remote rainforests of Papua New Guinea and northern Australia, and indigenous peoples have used it for pain and fever therapy for centuries.

 

 

 

"This goes to indicate that Western medicine hasn't cornered the market on innovative cures; there are traditional remedies out there still waiting to be researched," said principal author Ryan Shenvi, Ph.D., a professor of chemistry at Scripps Research, to reporters in mid-May.


What further medicinal herbs can you find in plants?

The most well-known example of a medical drug made from a plant species is opium, which has been used to relieve pain for about 4,000 years. Opiates, such as morphine and codeine, are derived from the opium poppy and have a powerful effect on the central nervous system.
 
But what about other ancient plant-based remedies that have been demonstrated to be effective in the medical field, and what proof backs them up?
 
Velvet beans are used to treat Parkinson's disease.
The velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine in India and China for about 3,000 years. According to ancient texts, healers used bean extracts to reduce tremors in patients suffering from the disease now known as Parkinson's disease.
 
The velvet bean contains a substance called levodopa, which is currently used to treat Parkinson's disease, according to recent studies.
 
 
 
Tremors are reduced by levodopa because it increases dopamine impulses in the brain's movement control areas.
 
 
 
Casimir Funk, a Polish biochemist, invented levodopa in the early twentieth century, marking the start of the drug's modern history. Levodopa was identified to be an effective treatment for tremors in Parkinson's disease patients in the 1960s by scientists. Medicine revolutionized disease treatment and is still the gold standard today.
 

In the future, hawthorn could be used to treat cardiovascular disease.

Clinical experiments using current research standards show that hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) lowers blood pressure and may be useful in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Hawthorn berries include bioflavonoids and proanthocyanidins, which appear to have strong antioxidant properties.
 
 
 
Hawthorn's medicinal properties were identified in the first century by Greek physician Dioscorides, and in the seventh century by Tang-Ben-Cao in ancient Chinese medicine.
 
 
 
 
Hawthorn extracts aren't yet safe for use by the general public; research is ongoing, and a more comprehensive study is needed to determine the extracts' long-term safety in treating diseases.
 

The Pacific yew tree's bark contains anti-cancer effects.

 
Yew trees are associated with medicine in European folklore. Because most parts of the tree are poisonous, it evokes overtones of death and immortality. In Macbeth, the Third Witch says, "Slips of yew slivered in the moon's eclipse" (Macbeth Act 4, Scene 1).
 
The Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia), a kind of yew tree native to North America, has the most health benefits.
 
Scientists discovered that the tree's bark contained compounds called taxels in the 1960s. One of these taxes, paclitaxel, has developed into a successful cancer therapy drug. Paclitaxel stops cancer cells from multiplying, stopping the disease from spreading.


This miraculous medicine is made from willow bark.

Hawthorn bark has been used in natural medicine for a long time. The bark was first used to treat pain in ancient Sumer and Egypt 4,000 years ago, and it has remained a staple of medicine ever since.
 
Salicin, a molecule found in willow bark, was eventually used to create aspirin, the world's most widely used drug.
 
Pain reduction, temperature control, and stroke prevention are just a few of the medical benefits of aspirin. During the 1918 flu pandemic, it was commonly used to treat high temperatures.
